The Real Reason Some People Have to Close Business

We were having a leisurely day visiting an historical destination that surprising provided insight to the real reason some people have to close business. A time out for lunch and then a walk around the town square lead to visiting a few retail shops. One such shop featured a sign out on the sidewalk that read, “closing for retirement”. It was a shoe shop and they happened to have a few shoe inserts left on the table for sale.  

I politely asked a simple question regarding the structure of the padding, but the response was anything but polite.  It was a perfect example of how not to deliver customer service and the real reason some people have to close business.

As I walked away as quickly as possible, the thought came to me that the real reason this proprietor is going out of business is that he is so rude that he couldn’t keep clientele. And now he is taking his anger out on those who visit the store until it closes.

Entrepreneurs, employees and salespeople all need to realize that other people are not trained on the same information you have in your head that you believe to be common sense. In fact, it is this very point that businesspeople need to focus on in order to build revenue streams.

Given experiences, studies and talents differ greatly, it is your unique combination of the three that give you a huge competitive edge compared to everyone else in your field. If you aren’t certain of which areas of your knowledge are not common for others, create a focus group or ask your peers for their input. Doing so will lend much insight as to the type of revenue streams that will be popular and you should seriously consider creating.

In fact, after the first round of inquiries of what to create, take the time to put your ideas to task. You might even create a prototype and then reconvene with the same group to get their input once again. They may well provide ideas for improvement to the point where you will be highly likely to succeed.

Your business may have the purpose of making huge sums of money, be a hobby or a community service. However you choose to remain active with it will always require treating your followings, customers, and peers with respect and be willing to offer assistance where needed.
