Attract the Right Job or Clientele: Amplify to Be Heard
The Washington Post published an intriguing article today by Juliet Eilperin. Every woman should read it. A new style of leadership in action is presented. At the start of the Obama Administration, the young female White House staffers were outnumbered by the men. They were pretty much ignored when meetings were held in the Oval Office with the President. These staffers took it upon themselves to repeat the highlights of what their counterparts said. This strategy got attention from the same men who previously shut them out. Amplifying their messages earned the women a voice to be heard in the office.
Stand your ground and speak up to be heard
My Story
In general, the work environment of larger companies has people working independently among different departments, and competitively in the sales department. Consequently, little information is shared. Learning is reduced due to the reluctance to communicate among peers. Women are still treated as a sub-set as reflected by the pay scale.
My sales carer made it necessary to boldly request 100% commission. This was due to the offered base salary being set at a fraction of what the men were provided. Initially, it was a tremendous risk to bet that I would sell well. But taking the risk increased motivation to do my best. On a couple of occasions, sales managers verbalized their anger toward me given I was earning more than them. Becoming accustomed to taking risk prepared me for the entrepreneurial world.
Varied Amplification
The good news is that the environment of competition and standing alone is slowly moving toward collaborative teamwork. This is evident in the world of sharing posts online. Startups are also using the formula of an open work environment where employees from different departments are encouraged to work together. The teamwork produces greater productivity and effectiveness. In this way, more attention may be devoted to clientele.
Your Story
Take the time to consider your job or business. Do you feel ignored or appreciated? Should the answer be “ignored”, spend further time figuring out why that might be. It could potentially be due to prejudice, or, it may be due to fear of speaking up.
Ideas to improve:
- Mirror what the women did in the Oval Office
- Take a public speaking class to gain confidence
- Develop the courage to provide at least one new idea at each new meeting
By acknowledging the problem, you are then equipped to take steps for overcoming a negative situation. As practice makes almost perfect, you then become more adept at expressing new ideas. At this point, you develop a strong personal brand and your ideas are more likely to be accepted. This is the beginning of developing leadership qualities. Now the platform becomes yours for advancing your career or business.
Sales Tips:
- Come to terms with whether your ideas are readily accepted.
- Create a plan to gain wider acceptance.
- Take classes and self-educate to increase knowledge.
- Create an inner circle of support.
- Repeat the better ideas each of your support members express.
- In subsequent meetings, remind everyone of the original thought.
- Encourage all members of the team to give the new ideas a try.
- Be a cheerleader for those on the outside of the inner circle.
- Become the leader for those not typically heard.
- Establish recognition among all of your peers.
