Attract the Right Job or Clientele:  Be Proud of Who You Are

It is very tough today to remain proud of who we are due to disagreeable news plus the competition we face. Many are motivated to divide us rather than to unite. This includes race, culture, and gender.

Stand tall, be strong, keep the faith.

My Story

It was with horror and anger that I read a synopsis of an article re-posted by Caroline Fairchild, a New Economy Editor at LinkedIn.  The author, of the article in question, originally posted in the Wall Street Journal. His belief is that women will get more opportunities in tech if they “create an online presence that obscures their gender.” His idea bizarrely equates hiring practices in tech to blind orchestra auditions. The author suggests that women do things such as only use their first initial and eliminate photos on both Twitter and LinkedIn. In short, he thinks women should solve the gender bias themselves by hiding who they really are.

What?!

The advice perpetuates the problem. Just imagine if you were to heed his advice.

  • What happens next when upon being called in for an interview?
  • Are we to dress ourselves as males?
  • Is he advocating we be deceptive?

Integrity is everything and to be included in all that we do.  Hiding is never the answer.

Back in Time

I was one of the female pioneers in sales. The advice reminds me of some of the ugly episodes that transpired. My personal advice is for each woman to stand up for who she is and what she believes in to become unstoppable.

A far improved approach is to be proud without ego, but with integrity. Accomplishments are to be displayed alongside one’s photo image.

In case the author isn’t familiar, our image and all that we represent is commonly known as our personal brand. It represents our reputation. Everything surrounding our personal brand is to be kept up to date in order to attract the better opportunities.

The second part to this story is those who want to segregate the population. There are those who believe that men excel in sales and that women should be put into a different category. Should there be any truth to this assumption (there isn’t) how would segregating women improve the situation? Improvement comes from being in the company of those more successful in order to fast forward your endeavors.

Your Story

If you have recently heard demeaning remarks, it’s time to do some soul searching.

  • How can you turn the remark into a positive?
  • What action(s) may you take today?
  • Are you ready to prove your point?

The best way to combat false or poor ideas is to embrace what you hold important. Be proud of your personal brand and convey it to others. Join groups dedicated to your profession that comprise a mix of cultures, genders, and race. In this way, you develop a wider perspective and understanding of people you are yet to meet. Collaboration improves possibility and greater likelihood of succeeding.

Sales Tips:
  1. Be proud of who you are
  2. Include your picture on social media sites
  3. Voice your opinion diplomatically
  4. Consider perspectives of others to gain consensus
  5. Strive to work with those different from yourself to learn more
  6. Only follow advice that you respect
  7. As you learn, teach those following from behind
  8. Speak up when something does not sound right
  9. Be seen as a leader in your field
  10. Attract the right interest and clientele
