Attract The Right Job Or Clientele:

Do Opposites Contribute to Business Growth?

You may wonder how opposites can collaboratively contribute to business growth and replace the typical arguments. Frequently we will experience the sentiments of, ‘my idea is better’ vs. ‘no, my idea is better!’

“The better approach for business growth is to relax, stop, look, and listen.

When we take our childhood lessons for safely crossing the street, we can apply them to the crossroads of business. But in this case, we aren’t just looking for the speeding car; we judge the accuracy for hitting our business target. The willingness to hear someone out while omitting judgment until they convey all the facts is an excellent practice for future negotiations.

My Story

We experience judgments set against us throughout our lifetime and quite possibly most direct the same toward others. Doing so in some circumstances is highly beneficial, such as having suspicion about a possible scam or simply not trusting another. However, varying opinions can halt us in our tracks for very different reasons. Unusual thought and expression of ideas can have us wondering if listening to the opposite beliefs will contribute to business growth.

Starting in the sales profession is a perfect example of modeling the business crossroads approach. The sales profession hurls new representatives in front of a collection of prospective clients of no familiarity whatsoever. Upfront meetings with prospective clients are frightening, but practice makes the process easier like any new endeavor. Believe it or not, the lack of confidence contributes to business growth in an unlikely manner.

The inexperienced salesperson, not knowing what to say that will have meaning, may instead ask questions to gain insights from their prospects. Similarly, in any meeting where we hear opposing thoughts, it’s best to sit back, observe the person speaking, and then ask questions as they arise.

The extra layer of sales steps is to observe the person’s facial expressions and body language as they express their viewpoint. Unknowingly, a person may convey a lack of congruity between their words, gestures, and expressions. At this juncture, using caution first with questions to follow will provide insight for whether to walk or advance the conversation.

Upon hearing an unusual statement, employ QLC to contribute to business growth:

  • Question
  • Listen
  • Clarify

“Trust is the Soul of Sales and all else that we do.

Inquire about the person’s experience to understand upon hearing an unusual perspective. Listen to all the person’s details and clarify anything you do not understand. Asking for clarification demonstrates integrity and trust – the two ingredients that fully contribute to business growth.

In any setting, we find people who think differently than us regardless of ethnicity, job title, or endeavors. We have a golden opportunity to learn helpful insights plus success strategies from a wide variety of people. And it’s all the more reason to embrace diversity and inclusion in our efforts. Those who succeed are willing to consider what others have to say. The result is that opposites do frequently contribute to business growth.

Your Story: Do Opposites Contribute to Business Growth?

Recently I read an article that had me stopped in my tracks about the internet and cloud services. I asked the person I typically ask for input on these matters. Admittedly, I was hoping for a different answer. I then approached two other men who are very familiar with the ins and outs of the internet and cloud. The two independently came to the same conclusion, the opposite of what the first person said. Additional research led to the decision that the two are correct.

The experience above is another example of letting go of what you typically do or relying on one person to embrace a potentially improved outcome.

Do You:

  • Rely solely on one person for answers?
  • Listen to varying input for better decisions?
  • Continue with the same habits to hopefully move forward?

Or Do You:

  • Seek out varying thoughts from leaders in the field?
  • Apply the news to your endeavors?
  • Contemplate new ways for growing business and client loyalty?

One of the better practices that will contribute to business growth is to expand our minds by listening carefully to opposing thoughts.  Obtaining the facts and weeding out the best from various people puts us in the position to make a more qualified decision for moving forward.

While some may not appreciate the challenge upfront, the broader perspective does lead to a more robust and meaningful approach for business development.  To overcome doubt about the merits, gamify what you hear.
