Attract the Right Job Or Clientele:

Do You Know How to Avoid Pretenders?

With so much ‘misinformation’ and scams being prevalent today, it gives way to our blog theme: Do you know how to avoid pretenders? While we need to be cautious not to allow fear to detain us, we must do our homework upfront before we agree to proceed on a new track.

My Story

When we begin to doubt others, we must question ourselves about how we come across. The reason is by noting the factors that contribute to the doubt, we know what to avoid moving forward. Upon watching an educational video yesterday, the phrase ‘Contender or Pretender’ was used to make me realize the importance of the topic. Accordingly, the following song lyrics come to mind:

The Great Pretender, Song by the Platters

‘Oh-oh, yes, I’m the great pretender

 Pretending that I’m doing well…’

We encounter the personality type pretender in all walks of life. Whether researching a new idea or item online, speaking with someone in person, or conducting serious business meetings, seeking out the truth upfront is essential, saving precious time.

Visitors Servicing Client Homes or Offices

It can be very concerning for some to allow an unknown person into their homes or offices to service equipment. An email confirming today’s appointment included a photo of the representative I would let inside. Immediately, I thanked the person sending the message.

Business Offers

Frequently, business offers come from people who state how they can help me and then follow up by asking what I do. Not doing their research upfront indicates they don’t care about providing proper service by putting in the research effort upfront.

Those who ‘push’ a sale are not on my trust list. Proper selling includes a meticulous process that involves asking and answering questions on both sides. The salespeople who seek out the details to serve their clientele well are far more trustworthy and likely to receive the business.

One example is the older notion of car salespeople being unscrupulous, as was my experience. A collaborative blog describes how some people today purchase cars by doing their research and never setting foot into the car dealership.

One-Sided Offers

Some people need to learn the meaning of collaboration as their offers only benefit them. A collaborative effort requires a clear long-term goal and the steps both must take together to achieve it. Worse, when a glorious outcome presents itself, we realize, upon examination, that we are the ones to invest to make it happen.

Some will attempt to fool themselves by agreeing to the idea, believing it will work out alright. Sadly, the outcome generally does not meet expectations.

The Better Approach

Being personable and communicating by listening to understand will guide one on the better path to ultimately earn the sale.

Your Story: Do You Know How to Avoid Pretenders?

When buying or selling, observing verbal and physical reactions to your communications is essential. Sometimes, the first conversation goes as expected, but in the following discussions, contradictions come forth.

The best step is to verbalize what was said previously versus the current statements and ask for clarification. Upon witnessing a stammering response or denial, it’s time to say, ‘No, thank you.’

As you show your appreciation to prospects and clientele, strive to work with people who appreciate you and your work. The effort that goes into effectively conducting business makes it essential to avoid pretenders.

In Conclusion: Do You Know How to Avoid Pretenders?

Those who excel in sales will focus on building a relationship with every individual they encounter. Yes, it takes longer to earn the sale, but the rewards are significantly higher, including earning a returning and referring clientele.
