Attract the Right Job Or Clientele:
Do You Realize The Commonalities of Sales, Job Search, And Dating?
A message from a dating coach brings to mind the question, Do you know the commonalities of sales, job search, and dating?
I had so many ‘first dates’ long ago that I couldn’t keep a record of them all. Back then, I was upset by the monologues the men gave me about their superiority. Yet they never wanted to know a thing about me. Their ego was unmatched until I entered the sales profession; the salesmen on the sales team duplicated the experience.
Interviewing for jobs was similar. Even after considerable experience with selling was mine, one hiring manager blew me off. Upon seeing me enter his office for an interview, he said the following (I kid you not!):
‘Your resume is full of crap; get out of her and don’t ever come back!’
Being one who never gives up, I returned a year later. Thankfully the person was no longer there, and the job became mine. It proved to be the best of my career.
And
Finally, on an arranged blind date, I met ‘the one,’ and the process was very similar to what I learned about selling years later:
Today’s Theme: Strive to build relationships ~Never Give Up!
- Know values and priorities inside and out.
- Match and qualify prospects.
- Ensure words, actions, and deeds match
My Story
Sales, hiring, accepting a job, and finding a soul mate require that we know our priorities. ‘Qualify and Match’ became my motto before the acceptance of a new client or a job offer. The same applies to dating plus many business-related efforts on our path. It becomes challenging to experience a successful outcome if we don’t share similar values.
The one sales strategy that applies to career change, selling, and dating is striving to build a good relationship upfront before advancing to the next level. Upfront, the following two questions can help to move the conversation forward potentially:
- What caught their interest in you to meet for a date or an appointment, and why?
- How do they see their future; what are their goals today and into the future?
Asking open-ended questions requires a more comprehensive answer. Accordingly, we more quickly learn about the other person’s thinking and whether there may be a good match with ours. Undoubtedly, we have each walked away from a poor job offer, a challenging first date, and a rude prospective client.
We do well to learn from past errors, poor judgment, and less-than-desirable results. It then becomes easier to improve new efforts. And the process aligns with the commonalities of sales, job search, and dating.

Your Story: Do You Realize The Commonalities of Sales, Job Search, And Dating?
As you enter a new realm for your career or personal life, it’s good to seek commonalities with previous experiences. Doing so allows for adapting more quickly to move forward. Similarly, as you may change jobs or partners, it’s helpful to consider the pros and cons that went before to focus on the better steps ahead.
Authentic relationships are essential at all levels. Being yourself rather than attempting to be the person someone else desires never works out well. Finding a relationship, job, or client who appreciates your efforts is ideal as it will serve everyone best. Strive to do your best for others to enjoy all that you do. At the same time, select to work with those who do the same. All arrangements should aim for a 50-50 endeavor contributing to a fruitful conclusion.
In your quiet time, consider varying areas of your life with which you are pleased and wish to improve. Consider these questions:
- Is there consistency in all that you do?
- Can you transfer the success skills in one area that are lacking in another?
- How can you apply the best of what you do to your career?
In Conclusion: The Commonalities of Sales
The next step is to pursue what you want, how you want, with all you have until you achieve it! Reviewing the varying areas of life will give you insight into better ways to proceed. If you have doubts or questions, speak with the people you trust to hear their perspectives. Although you may not agree with everything they suggest, it will alert you to what you want to do most. Above all, never give up!
