Do You Know The Science Behind Standing at Work: How It Affects the Body?
Our guest blog suggests that the science behind standing at work explains how it affects the body, for better or worse, to illustrate if you are better on your feet or staying off them.
In a classic episode of Seinfeld, George Costanza decides it’s unfair for a security guard to stand all day, so he buys the person a chair to sit in during his shifts. In exaggerated comedic fashion, the guard falls asleep, and thieves rob the store for all its worth.
That extreme example aside, Costanza does bring up a good point about standing versus sitting on the job. In all seriousness, we provide the science behind standing at work and how it affects the body to see where the answer lies.

The Science Behind Standing at Work: How It Affects the Body
The Good News
Many hope standing at work will increase productivity on the job. While that is debatable, the following benefits are evident.
Better Posture
In theory, sitting at a desk all day may be more comfortable. However, that does not account for sitting with a bad posture that can lead to chronic pain. On the other hand, standing can help improve your posture by keeping your spine straight. A standing desk adheres to ergonomic principles, ensuring your body won’t experience nearly as much strain as it would while sitting.
Alleviated Wrist Pain
Your wrists tend to be in the wrong position while you’re typing, especially if you keep your laptop in your lap. Standing while you type ensures the wrists remain at a natural 90-degree angle. Ideally, this should reduce the chances of getting carpal tunnel syndrome or nerve damage from typing in undesirable positions.
Improved Circulation
Humans, as a species, have always been on the move. Standing is a great way to strengthen your legs, core, and equilibrium. Long periods of sitting may cause blood flow to halt and pull in the legs. It may, in extreme circumstances, lead to blood clots. Standing allows you to stretch your legs and increase blood flow.
The Bad News
As peachy as standing at work sounds, it is not all good things. Unfortunately, a few problems may arise, especially for people in compromising positions or conditions.
Sore Feet
The worst part of standing is the strain it puts on your feet. Anyone with flat feet or any other foot issue may not appreciate the benefits of standing because their feet kill them. Standing on the job is only for some. If you have to stand at work, you can look into different types of anti-fatigue matting to alleviate foot pain with cushioning.
Varicose Veins
Veins in the lower legs swell if you stand for extended periods. Many refer to these lower leg veins as varicose veins, common among waitstaff, healthcare professionals, and others who stand for extended periods. Varicose veins are not dangerous, but they can be uncomfortable.
What Is Best?
The only thing that is clear about the science behind standing at work and how it affects the body is that the evidence is murky.
While plenty of studies about standing at work exist, nothing concrete exists about the findings. One study will show one thing, while another will show something else. Ultimately, more evidence is necessary to determine the absolute best option. What may be beneficial for one person may be an issue for another. All you can do is do what feels best while considering these pros and cons.
In Conclusion: The Science Behind Standing At Work
Due to our uniqueness, we must pay attention to what our bodies tell us, such as whether to sit or stand. However, taking breaks to enjoy physical activity or faithfully exercising after work is always best to increase alertness and well-being.
