Our blog question, Do You Realize the Benefits of Needing to See Work Elsewhere? may sound strange, but there is merit to and much to gain by moving on. First and foremost, it makes zero sense to remain in a toxic environment appearing to be commonplace today. Psychologically, one can feel self-defeated upon being one of the targets. Staying in place will only worsen the situation, as in coming to believe one is not worthy of anything better.
Holiday conversations revealed the dilemma of nastiness directed at reports in the office and the requirement to work during the holiday, typically a paid vacation day. Uniformly guests were bemoaning their experiences and realizing the potential benefits of seeking work elsewhere.
By the time I entered the sales arena, I had already experienced years of maltreatment by others. So my antenna signal was front and center to what was going on behind my back. The situation worsened as I repeatedly proved myself each month by being at the top of the sales scoreboard.
Adversity Beckons New Style Leadership
Good came out of the situation, as there are always two sides to every dilemma.
My benefits came to be:
- Realizing the commonplace poor management style
- The need for diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Recognizing how to sell oneself in interviews
- Collecting the horrific employment stories to capture the attention of two publishing houses
- Establishing leadership in my style and on my timeline
Each new company trained me well. First and foremost, I learned more about how not to lead or treat others. Second, each new sales environment gave me a more in-depth view of improving sales skills and developing relationships with clientele.
Although management continued to attempt to knock me down, I was in the process of becoming unstoppable.
A New Leadership Style Transforms Business
Eleven years in a sales-employed career via eleven jobs gave me a broad scope of lessons and know-how to do better on my own. The maltreatment taught me to seek out those who might appreciate what I have to offer. The willingness to move from competition to collaboration became the gateway for utilizing social media well and generating a robust audience.
Commitment to Learning from the Good and Bad
Since every story has two sides, our best effort will be our commitment to learning from both sides. Taking it up a notch is also to commit to ‘learn, teach, learn and repeat.’ Upon realizing what not to do in addition to what works best and adding momentum for even better results, we can share with our audience. The openness develops trust that grows into more business, including referrals and testimonials.
New Work Isn’t Necessarily the Best Answer
Each time one leaves a job to test the waters at a new place of employment can be seen as a gamble. Frequently, minimal improvement comes our way. However, the personality types provide new lessons to observe, digest, and improve upon as we may move to the next new job the following year. Know that it is okay to seek work elsewhere.

Through the years, we learn new tactics and strategies, recognize what we prefer, and how to build a business in our unique style further. Accordingly, we have a treasure trove of learning that we can use to become entrepreneurs, transform the business into larger companies and take the leadership reigns should we desire.

It is difficult to avoid stress when treatment is not as it should be within the work environment. But it is the juncture to step up and take the necessary action to move on to seek work elsewhere and advance your career. Each establishment can learn what works best for management and employees and what to omit from the playbook.
Similar to making a sale and building a business, you will do well to create a plan that includes your long-term goal of what you ultimately want to accomplish. If necessary, attach extra motivation for attending to your plan’s details with something as simple as a memorable vacation. And then, work backward, setting yearly, quarterly, and monthly goals to achieve your vision more quickly.
Your due diligence in pursuing your goals will ultimately turn heads. The only person to depend upon upfront is yourself. And with the experience of maltreatment, you now realize the better way to treat employees should you desire to grow your company. Attempt to establish a place of business where employees remain loyal instead of seeking work elsewhere. Become the CEO who values others and leads by attending to the best interests of all you may. Doing so will be a big win for all, and you will become a force in your own right as you build a respected brand and clientele!

The beauty is in working how we desire without depending upon another who is inclined to diminish our contributions. Therein lies the benefits of needing to seek work elsewhere! In the end, despite some unfathomable circumstances, we come out on the other side, seemingly on top when we pursue business and our careers in the style we prefer.
