The Interview Is Done … Now What?

Since you’re selling yourself at a job interview, sales techniques are similar to interview techniques. Sometimes, however, it’s what you do after the interview that can make or break the deal for a hiring manager. Make sure you take the right steps after the interview to enhance your performance instead of detracting from your strong points.

Your job isn’t over once the interview ends – make sure you do more than play the waiting game!

Say “Thank You” Within 48 Hours

As discussed in “How to Follow Up After a Job Interview,” when the interview is over, you’re not just playing the waiting game. There is a specific protocol that must be followed after the initial meeting, and the first step is to thank the interviewer. Send a thank you the same day of the interview or, at the latest, the next day.

Follow Up

Within two weeks, follow up with the person who interviewed you. This step is sensitive and requires some thought. You can’t come off as pushy or insistent. Use careful language and be certain not to give the impression that you’re rushing or pressuring the hiring manager. Reiterate that you enjoyed meeting them and that you are still interested in the position.

Etiquette

Be sure to get the business cards of everyone involved in the interview. It is essential to get their names and business titles right in any thank yous or follow ups. Be sure to use the appropriate or preferred medium (email, handwritten card, etc.). Also, make sure to alert your references that they can be expecting a call.

Job interviews can be anxious, stressful affairs that require preparation, practice and confidence. After the interview however, a series of faux pas or displays of poor etiquette can negate any good impression that you made during the meeting. Know your post-interview protocol and nail the entire interview.
