Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

Do You Allow Additions to Your Story?

My recent article suggested that you create an impact when sharing your story and when the time is right to allow additions. The article was picked up and shared by Advisorpedia. The topic proved popular and has an expansion of its own which is the subject of today’s article.

Allowing additions to your personal perspective creates a larger vision with greater opportunity.

My Story

Once again, I was found watching television. Although I’m not a fan of most police or detective shows, I am completely drawn in by the show, Blue Bloods. The story line is highly compelling.

Each episode has the family enjoying dinner together. But the dinners are sometimes tough, because each character openly discusses their varied viewpoint on one particular issue. Each person’s perspective has validity but lacks a missing element of the entire picture.

This concept is very similar to a sales meeting destined for a good outcome. By allowing for each person’s input, a more in-depth solution may be found. Sometimes, it is very hard to seriously consider ideas that are opposed to your beliefs. Yet with patience, and attempting to fully understand all angles of the problem, the wisdom will come through.

Your Story: Do You Allow Additions to Your Story?

  • Are you quick to dismiss new ideas?
  • Do you attempt to listen to opposing viewpoints?
  • For either answer, where do you believe improvement may be made?

As you work your way into a meaningful dialogue with a prospective client, their story should be heard first. Next, it is your turn to share a two minute or less personal story of how you became involved in your industry or why you built your company. The remainder of the conversation should advance with questions you ask of the person or people in the room.

Inclusion

Everyone has past experiences, ideas for the future and personal likes and dislikes. It is your job to uncover these facts in terms of how they will affect future decisions such as a potential sale or hiring of the next employee. One of the most important strategies for making an excellent impression is to treat everyone as equals and encourage everyone’s input.
