Today’s story about Trantor Liu and his vision is highly motivating.  He made the leap from being employed to owning his own business.  The tried and true formula includes his seeing a need, and audience desire for a new service.  Trantor added ingenuity to making resumes come alive.  Hence the business name, “Cake Resume”.

Trantor Liu’s Story

My name is Trantor Liu. I am a novice entrepreneur. About a month ago, I founded my own company CakeResume, after leaving my one and a half year job at a startup as a web developer. CakeResume is a resume website builder; it combines the characteristics of a traditional resume together with the innovative multimedia elements of personal websites, allowing users to create a personal brand through online resume production.

The Challenges Faced

At the beginning of my startup, I encountered many challenges. Initially, I was a web developer, but now I have to deal with content marketing, social media marketing, web design, and other miscellaneous matters that relate to the company’s operations. Even though I am not a native English speaker, CakeResume focuses on the European and American markets, which makes the whole job more difficult. To help with this, I often commission articles on Fiverr for just $5.00; I will first write out the article’s outline, and then hire people to help with the editing.

Despite these challenges, the effect of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on my articles is still positive. This is my 80/20 rule – due to limited resources, I manage to use 20 percent of effort to complete 80 percent of the work. This is my motto:

Premature optimization is the root of all evil.  – Donald Knuth

Why I Started CakeResume

I believe that a resume can be so much more than simply a text document; it should reflect the current age of internet technology. A personal site with well-designed multimedia elements ensures a much more engaging experience for the reader than a traditional resume. Not only does it enhance the reader’s experience, but it also increases your own marketability through having an online presence. Your own personal site that highlights your professional background while still keeping a personalized feel can give you an advantage, both for marketing purposes as well as making it easy for those interested to learn more about you.

While it is true that there are already many startups trying to replace the traditional resume with a personal site, many overcomplicate the process through complex template designs or options for font settings. A traditional resume is text-heavy and not easily transferred to a modern web design. I could not find a simple editor to create a self-introductory personal site, so that is why I decided to create CakeResume. My intention is not to create another resume substitute, but to improve it, by making it more accessible. That is why I founded CakeResume, a resume website builder.

CakeResume, A Resume Website Builder

A resume website is a highly customized personal website with no content restrictions. You can upload pictures, videos, presentations and other multimedia elements to highlight personal characteristics and qualities. At the same time, it is like a one-page resume, easy to share and browse; with minimalistic design, using font and layout to increase readability.

After I submitted the prototype to Product Hunt, it was featured on the first page and rose to the top 4 of the day. Now, we have more than 3,000 users from all over the world with an average homepage signup conversion rate of 20%. So, I think there is a market for this idea. I’m thankful that I embraced the motivation to move from employee to entrepreneur.
