Attract the Right Job Or Clientele:
Do You Embrace Community Spirit?
Giving of oneself is a high form of giving and teaches us the benefits and the why of embracing community spirit. Individuals and companies, too, thrive when they adopt a cause to benefit many.
Some companies dedicate one day a year to organizations in need, while others make it a year-round contribution. Likewise, individuals may help out, for example, daily at a soup kitchen, while others may donate time to a children’s hospital as time permits. One feels the personal pleasure of realizing their good deed(s).
My Story
The experience of moving across the country continues to have my admiration and encourages me to embrace community spirit on multiple levels. There is never one way to live life, and on occasion, we find that our initial feeling of not belonging can change overnight with a move into the unknown.
As the foliage unfolds on the east coast, I describe the experience as living within a painting each spring. It’s easy to embrace the community spirit here due to the general goodwill of people and the effort to improve the well-being of the public in general.
As I was coming of age long ago, I was ridiculed for riding a bike because it wasn’t appropriate for females. I hung onto mine for as long as I could. The rides gave me a sense of freedom and appreciation for my surroundings. But sadly, in my early teens, adults sold the bike without my consent. Moving to the east coast and late in life, I soon learned that biking is an ‘in sport’ for all – young, elders, and anyone who has an interest.
Biking is another perfect example of diversity and inclusion coupled with community spirit!
I was excited to realize I could get back on a bike. The skill never left. Even better was the discovery of the exceptional bike paths throughout the state.
A spring bike ride on the paths that run for many miles is heavily wooded and beautiful. The only drawback is that one needs to watch where they are riding, or they may fall! Occasionally, one can see all types of wildlife, including deer, horses, beautiful turtles, birds, and geese. The community is committed to maintaining these well-used paths for bikers, joggers, and people walking.
‘Bicycling Builds Better Communities’
The Fairfax Alliance for Better Biking (FABB) embraces the slogan, ‘Bicycling Builds better Communities.’ They advocate for making bicycling a part of our daily lives and invite others to join us. Of course, given the wide swing of temperatures and much rain, a daily ride is not possible from my viewpoint. However, bike groups and events invite people to join in on short and lengthy rides.
This week we had a ‘Bike to Work’ event that attracted numerous people. Upon visiting D.C. today, I saw someone wearing a souvenir T-shirt having contributed to an event similar to the one we joined. We enjoyed a laugh and the camaraderie.
FABB’s commitment (via a brochure) is working to enhance conditions for bicyclists in the county by:
- Advocating for safe and connected bike routes
- Providing input to policy plans on bicycle travel
- Promoting the bike to work day and safe routes to school
- Offering bicycle education for beginner and experienced riders
- Expanding the bicycling community with group riding events
The benefits are many from the bike for the communities at large:
- Scenic paths for those into outdoor exercise
- Encouragement of healthy living
- The support of bike-to-work day in good community spirit
- A reduction of gas emissions
- A healthier environment for all

Your Story
The sales environment and business, in general, can be highly competitive. But when we focus solely on ourselves, little is to be gained when we compare it to society at large and how the stakes can be grander.
Companies of all sizes will do well to consider how they may benefit their local community or associations that dedicate themselves to the good of the people they serve. Notice whether enthusiasm plus dedication to work increases in scope. It will be an excellent exercise to see how the staff responds upon establishing a program together for them to participate.
Accordingly, thinking about the collaborative nature of helping communities may bring about a better team spirit and perhaps improve your company’s results. Now consider combining forces with other companies by enriching communities for the benefit of many.
Decide upon the type of service that may matter to your workforce and you the most. Three examples include:
- Environment
- Food growth and harvesting
- Health
In Conclusion: The community spirit will turn into a teaching opportunity for staff and individuals on how we can each contribute to change when we have the desire and motivation to do so. Together the benefits become exponential and for the welfare of all.
