Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

How To Incorporate Workplace Safety When Onboarding New Employees

Every HR professional wants to make the new employee’s onboarding journey successful, something that’s completely seamless. But, while most expect it to be seamless, that’s rarely the case. So, we ask you: What comes to mind when you hear the word “onboarding”?

Those doing the hiring typically consider the standards. Topics include getting the new hire to feel adjusted, knowing what they’re doing, and getting them curious about the company culture to learn more. However, one more thing gets overlooked: Protocol.

No, not work protocol, but workplace safety specifically. Sure, in some workplaces, it’s the standard; it’s legally required, such as in a factory or a construction site. However, the space itself shouldn’t matter; the industry and the business don’t matter because all businesses need to focus on workplace safety. But how does a company ensure everyone—new hires and long-term staff—goes home safely and sound daily? Our collaborative blog offers insights on incorporating workplace safety when onboarding new employees.

Incorporate Workplace Safety When Onboarding New Employees

Begin With A Warm Welcome

Even though they’re already hired, the onboarding process shouldn’t end there. It’s critical to remember that first impressions matter, so start strong. A warm, engaging introduction sets the tone for the new hire’s experience. During the trial period, they decide whether they like the company. It’s critical to realize that if they’re not welcomed with open arms, there will be bad retention rates, and then you must redo the whole interviewing process. The time-consuming process is not something you want to repeat.

To ensure a warm welcome, consider creating a welcome kit with a personalized note, company swag, and an outline of their first week. Just remember that a comfortable new employee is more receptive and ready to absorb all the crucial information you will share.

Break Down the Basics

Many assumptions about workplace safety are made about what’s safe, what’s not, and what’s a big deal versus what’s not. While there is typically an information overload of rules and regulations, ensuring people understand and comply with them is critical.

It is helpful to introduce pieces at a time. For example, within the new hire’s first couple weeks, instead of throwing all the safety rules and regulations at them in one full sweep, break it into smaller pieces, such as one day going over emergency procedures like evacuation routes. Next, on another day, there will be OSHA safety training. Not all businesses or industries require this, but it’s good to be aware of it. On the day following, discuss the use of proper equipment, and if PPE is required, use a day to review it. The process is about breaking everything new into bite-size pieces to make it easier for new hires to remember.

Make It Interactive

Let’s be honest—no one loves a dry lecture. Worse, you can’t expect someone to retain information like that. So, making your safety training sessions interactive and engaging would be a good idea. Ideally, it’s best to use a mixture of videos, quizzes, and hands-on demonstrations to cover all learning styles for ongoing new hires. For example, if you demonstrate how to use a fire extinguisher, let your new hires try it out in a controlled environment. The hands-on approach is generally more memorable and inviting.

In Conclusion: Incorporate Workplace Safety When Onboarding New Employees

Getting into the mindset of new employees is critical to increasing their chances of feeling welcome and appreciative of their new career opportunities. The bonus provides insights on how they can maintain their safety and well-being. The goal is to motivate long-term staff to do their best and contribute to the company’s bottom line.
