The Professional Network

Everyone refers to LinkedIn as the professional social network applicable both for finding jobs, connecting with others and finding potential clients. The major tip to keep in mind is that given it is professional, people are busy with work so keep your replies or introductions very short.

LinkedIn offers a standard invitation for you to invite others.  But to me, it’s like a script in that it does not show your true personality.  If you do use their line, put it at the end of a brief message stating why you would like to connect.  You might have more success including connecting with someone at a much higher level than you.

“Sharon” tested the waters with an executive at a high tech startup.  This company actually blocked all information for a Google Search.  However, she found one member of the team on LinkedIn. Hearing my advice, she sent an inMail stating first that she enjoys the news of his company and the reason why that was, and then asked to connect.  Waiting time was involved but the response came.

Proud to say, Sharon is now connected.  The better news is that LinkedIn provided the email address making a longer and more personal communication possible. Of course, I also advised to make it a practice to be brief so as to not turn anyone off.

These techniques may help you find the right job or the next perfect client.  Wishing you good hunting and a Smooth Sale!
