Responding to the Unexpected

Has a prospective employer or client ever asked you to do something that is almost within your reach of capability but of which you never previously or seriously considered?  On occasion, most of us are caught by surprise; unfortunately many do not know the better way to handle their response.

Those who fumble are the ones who automatically, without giving any thought to the random idea, will say “No, I’m not interested”, or, “I can’t do that”.  These are the folks who are black and white thinkers and most likely did well in school.

On the other end of the spectrum are the creative folks.  They will stop in their tracks to learn more by asking questions.  For starters, they may ask, “Why are you suggesting this?”  A similar type question will help to gain insight on what the other person sees in you and will lead to why the suggestion was made.  To your grand surprise, it may lead to a new open door which was previously closed because it was never considered.

When you take a moment to find out where comments come from and then ask questions to uncover the possibilities, this is when your opportunity arises to uncover new streams of income whether an entrepreneur or a job seeker.

I can almost guarantee the creative question and answer session will lead to a very Smooth Sale!
