Rules for Declining Opportunity

Some opportunities are equal to “A wolf disgusied in sheep’s clothing”.  So today’s blog is the exact opposite of what I normally preach of saying yes to opportunity.  Job offers need to be examined with the same care as described below!

Many have been led to believe they are the “lucky ones” to have been selected to participate in a collaborate promotional event with recognized experts in their field.  But upon further examination, you might wonder, “Just who is the actual lucky one?”

Before you agree to participate, consider all the facts.  Will this effort further your goals while remain true to your principles?  Are you certain your intended audience will appreciate the information?  Will you be building brand recognition the right way?  Wait 24 hours before responding to let the excitement subside and use your intuitive power.

Once your personal questions are answered, it will be time to speak with the organizer.  Ask why you were chosen to participate, what their previous experience has been, and, their expectations and requirements of you.  More improtantly, uncover a frequently hidden factor – that of upfront costs.  Pointedly ask what these are and the expected timeframe for a return on investment.

The answers will intuitively and analytically provide you the best direction to take.  Should you need to exit, do so diplomatically.  Thank everyone for their time and consideration.  Leave the door open for “down the road”.  You just never know how your paths may cross again.  Meanwhile, you will maintain The Smooth Sale!
