My upfront confession is that I had never watched sports on television before, as other things were on my mind. However, there is a lot of buzz about the new Commanders’ Coach and the new Team. I surprised everyone last Sunday by sitting down to watch the Commanders play. With business always in mind, I focused on their strategic plays, which significantly differed from previous seasons. 

You may wonder how football may be related to business growth. Sports is a huge industry and is typically highly profitable. Moreover, traditional corporate companies and sports figures are assigned to lead their teams to victory. The notable piece is that successful sports teams depend heavily on strategic teamwork to the nth degree!

Accordingly, larger companies and entrepreneurs can learn much by watching the various team plays to realize the better sportsmanship and teamwork that can propel a team to the Super Bowl or an excellent corporate year-end! Wishful Thinking Sometimes Works

I had never heard of a ‘Hail Mary’ play before, but low and behold, with only seconds left in a previous game, a Commander player threw the ball from afar, and another caught it past the goal line to win the game. That one play caught my attention because, in the sales arena, I took chances with Fortune 100 and 500 companies that no one else would. Sometimes, all you need is to step up and reach out in a notable way to make a sound impression to earn the sale.

Safety vs. Risk

Most people need income and want to keep their jobs. They are nervous about expressing a unique thought or suggesting someone’s idea isn’t up to par. If the person wishing to speak up is not popular within the company, it’s almost a given that nothing will be said or taken seriously if it is. 

It takes courage to express concerns boldly or offer creative, strategic ideas at the right time. Those who realize they are not part of the ‘inner team’ will work alone, quietly test their ideas, and then implement them for significant results. Meanwhile, management and counterparts tend to get upset and wonder, ‘What just happened?’
