Respectfully Clarify Conversations for Career and Business Growth
In the past, I was advised to use ‘Airplane Mode’ on my phone in the airport and while traveling in general to avoid potential hacking. I adhered to the advice. But times and circumstances change, raising the question about ‘what to do.’ This year’s trip will have someone meeting us at an overseas airport. The question was, will it be safe to use the phone upon landing?
I was advised to call our provider regarding Air Phone Mode. Upon doing so, the representative relayed that the adjustment on the phone settings was strictly to prohibit airplane tech interference. Furthermore, he let me know that it has nothing to do with whether people can hack the phone or not. The answer surprised me, so I did a Google search to verify that the representative’s advice was correct, and it is. The other possibility is to consider obtaining another phone for potential emergencies and photo-taking. The advice I received reminds me of my business efforts and the advice I pass forward: Respectfully clarify conversations for career and business growth.

Learn from the Past
It’s likely safe to say that we all err, and we can learn much from our mistakes when we are willing to learn and revise future efforts. Consider past miscommunications with staff, clientele, peers, and friends and how they were resolved. But more importantly, it’s wise to acknowledge that some issues were left unresolved, which only serves to create a barrier between us and the other party.
Admitting to not only being responsible for an oversight but also ending a friendship or partnership can save one’s ‘sinking ship’ due to poor word of mouth quietly spreading. One primary goal is to build a solid reputation, encouraging positive word of mouth from those we meet, which in turn fosters personal growth, both in our careers and businesses.
Protect Current Standing
Scams are non-stop via every platform and traditional communication method, including, but not limited to, phone, email, and messaging. When doubt arises, it’s wise to take a moment to research the person and the message behind the scenes, and then take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
Look to the Future
As we become more adept at acknowledging our areas for improvement and taking action, we can foresee a brighter future ahead and perhaps a more challenging one to achieve. However, the mental strength we develop over time can add an element of excitement as we anticipate overcoming new barriers to achieve what others deem ‘an unrealistic endeavor’, as it will never pay off. But what if it does work out the way we envision it doing so? The thrill of ‘the roller coaster ride’ can be exhilarating as we experience more ‘ups’ than ‘downs’ to achieve our ambitious goals.

In addition to planning our journey, a necessary strategy is to embrace the art of asking questions, listening carefully to the responses, and asking more insightful questions for more in-depth answers. Clarify anything that may have a double meaning or that you do not fully understand. The benefit to the latter doesn’t showcase that you are ‘dumb’ but that you are ‘trustworthy’ by admitting what you do not know. Only a small percentage of people will openly admit to not knowing and will more likely put you into the category of ‘preferred businessperson.’

Upon becoming known as ‘the person willing to learn’, companies will begin treating you as a collaborative partner rather than just a vendor. The open communication admitting ‘not knowing or understanding’ is the key to unlocking the door to seemingly unattainable business or the corporate position that previously seemed unattainable as well. Why? The leadership recognizes you as credible, trustworthy, and the type with whom they wish to conduct business.
