Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

5 Tips for Quickly Connecting Online

Now in my comfort zone as I connect with new people online, the process has become easy as well as entertaining to a degree.  But most of all, I have met the most remarkable people, and for a large percentage, we have become friends.  To this last point, initially it took a long time for me to get that level of comfort, but that isn’t true any longer.  It’s time to share my findings.

To clarify, most of these interactions begin on Twitter.

  1. Interesting name or title

As I scan through the mention section of Twitter, and after I re-tweet and/or reply to people, I then scan for the interesting company names and brief descriptions.  Twitter moves so quickly, that it becomes easy to capture a few possibilities in a very short window of time.

      2.  Introduction

Addressing the person by name rather than “hi there” always receives the better response.  A thank you for a mention or kind words is also in order.  The next step is to briefly (you only have 140 character spaces allotted) reveal what caught your attention such as the company name, the work, or meaningful thought found in their profile.

  1.  Personalize

Research the person’s work on other sites such as LinkedIn or their own website.  Look for commonalities in work, experience, and area in which they live.  Then consider if you have any stories from your experience to share that could be of interest.

  1. Spontaneity

As much as possible let the other person speak first in order to recognize their interests.  If at all possible, connect what is told to you to your own experience.  Funny short stories earn a gold star.   For example, my most memorable early sales career experiences were horrific at the time.  But years later, as I look back on these to re-tell, both the listener and I break out laughing.  This creates the personal bond.

  1. True Connection

Your conversation will take on a more serious tone.  Listen, ask questions and clarify anything not understood.  Toward the end, inquire as to how you might help one another.  Most often a new idea materializes or further introductions are made, but if none of this occurs, you will have at the very least, made a friend.

Everyone enjoys being remembered.  The next time the person comes to your thought, reach out by saying “Hi” and ask for their updates.  You just might produce a new idea and be led to the Smooth Sale!
