What Lessons May Politicians Learn from Businesspeople?

Recently, the topic of one’s personal brand has become very popular.  Entrepreneurship and the marketing effort for business points to just how important it is to have one’s brand understood and clarified.  It begins with one’s values and priorities for conducting business, and recognizing the point at which one will stop at the line in the sand to cease conducting business.  The second phase is to communicate your brand and policies well so that you find the best qualified and matched clientele.

Politicians running against one another have a dilemma when it comes to keeping their personal brand in tact.  They need to appeal to as wide a population as possible in order to win the election.  In so doing, it dilutes some of what they stand for.  A way around this is to negotiate in a way to find a happy medium where it doesn’t violate their principles.

To build a returning and referring clientele, integrity, trust and sound relationships are a requirement.  Someone may buy from a salesperson who is questionable the first time around, but a second sale will be highly unlikely.  Customer service excellence and continuing to build the relationship are what encourage additional sales.   This is a principle politicians will do well to heed.

Politicians need to live up to the promises they made in their campaigns in order to be re-elected after their term is up, or they will face a tough uphill battle.  Many get lost along the way by compromising their own values in order to pay back supporters that donated heavily to their campaign.

The donations may be likened to startups seeking funding.  Sometimes in order to secure the help you need, the requirements are too high such as having to give away much of the ownership in your company, and permitting strangers to sit on the Board. 

In all transactions, legal documents need to be scrutinized, as do decisions to keep your personal brand in tact.  The larger the investment, the more attention needs to be given to all the factors contributing to the event in question. 

Just as with any sale, either “yes” or “no” is an acceptable answer to the requirements put on you for specific decisions or contributions.  By giving due consideration of whether the matter at hand is in alignment with your personal brand, the better decision is more likely to be made.  Adhering to this advice will lead you to the Smooth Sale!
