Balance Truth with Diplomacy

The business of sales has taught me to fully understand my prospective client’s thought first before ever trying to sell anything.  Only by understanding their experience, thought and future desire, is it possible to know what they need and are willing to change to move the sale forward.  These principles apply whenever you are asked, “What do you think?”

The best strategy would be to stop and think about the words you are about to speak.  If you are in favor of the situation, there is no problem and you will be hailed as a great friend.  However, if something is troubling you about the subject matter, truth balanced with diplomacy becomes a requirement.

Telling the truth provides you with the benefit of never having to change your story.  Over time, the consistency of having worked in this manner builds your reputation and personal brand.  Others come to know you long before personally connecting with you. Those who are familiar with you, recognize they may always count on you to provide excellent insight. 

However, when suggesting corrective action, it is the art of returning a question with a question (to learn more) and diplomacy that allow your ideas to be verbalized in a kind manner.  It’s as simple as asking, “Why do you ask?”  This allows you to get to the heart of the matter.  

Salespeople provide reasoning known as benefits as to why prospective clientele should make a change.  These are easy to understand and motivate many to go ahead and buy from the salesperson.  Offering insights as to why change is suggested provides the other person with greater understanding and appreciation of your position. 

Should the original question concern a partnership between you and the other person, the diplomacy allows for a negotiation to take place should it become necessary.   If you are representing one party to another while an issue arises, it’s best to act as the mediator versus taking sides.  Encouraging teamwork while on a job or to advance your career will see far better success.

If you were to try to cover up a situation while reporting back to one of the parties, over time you are bound to run into serious repercussion.   Allowing negotiation to take place affords each party to make a concession.  Upon helping both to find the middle ground, enables you to present both with a satisfactory settlement.
