Our recurring theme is about authentic story-telling and actions that increase the impact of your story regarding your prospect or hiring manager. Today I was reminded about another instance when creative strategy using story-telling provides help for getting past the gatekeepers.

My Story
Prior to extreme security after 911, I found a fun and effective way to work with receptionists as well as guards with guns. At every conceivable holiday, I walked into the offices with miniature candy bars. One guard who threatened that I was to never return, broke down into tears upon being provided the candy. He could barely be heard saying, “No one ever gave me anything before.”
Receptionists became my best friend because I treated them as if they were the CEO of their position. They provided the contact information needed for the titles requested. At proposal time, many became my advocate for the executives to decide in my favor.
All those with whom I met referred to me as “a breath of fresh air”. It wasn’t until years later that I learned my nickname was in reference to my personal brand. Most other salespeople, and management too, viewed the niceties as time-wasters. Instead, my actions proved to be essential for building relationships and business.

Take a step back to examine your actions. Our actions closely tie into our defined personal brand. And it’s our personal brand that becomes the initial story for new prospects to consider. The personal connection is to be made first in order to seriously be considered for a sale or acquiring a job.
- Are any of your actions perceived as unusual compared to others in your field?
- Were you ever tempted to try something new but stopped due to being dissuaded by others?
- Is there something you may implement that will add impact to your personal story and encourage sales?
The better strategy is to review your current habits and strategies in all regards for the sales process. And then consider whether your actions increase the impact of your story!

- Build a unique personal brand with thoughtful actions and deeds.
- Review the words used by clients to describe you.
- Recall why clients said they chose to buy from you over the others.
- In which circumstances has appreciation been expressed the most and why?
- Determine how you may expand upon the appreciation felt.
- Appreciation is normally expressed due to action taken on the person’s behalf.
- Continue to build upon the appreciation by serving your clients well.
- As your actions increase the impact of your story, the continuity in appreciation will usually convert to solid relationships.
- Your clientele becomes your salesforce in disguise by recommending you to those they know.
- The sales pipeline fills with repeat business referrals and testimonials.
