My Story
Just today, I sent an email to a friend saying that I’m the opposite of technically competent. The irony lies in the fact that technology startups frequently ask that I beta test their product. I’ve come to realize that the more creative person is able to provide a different type of input than would come from a more seasoned technical personality.
The real help is seen where the creative will point out the areas of difficulty found. This helps to build a more user friendly product for a much larger prospective clientele. If I were to say, “wow that’s great technology and easy to use”, the executives know they have a potentially winning product.

Have you ever been called into a meeting or for a job opening only to wonder, “Why would they ask me?” It’s because they see you on the opposite side of the spectrum able to fill in the empty gaps.
List the times these types of opportunities were presented:
- Did you say “no” or “yes”?
- What was the outcome?
- If there is room for improvement how will you react the next time?
Sometimes these situations are unnerving but you owe it yourself to give them a try. By working with it, not only will you help the others in the room, but over time you will learn a tremendous amount in the process. This is how you fast forward your work.

- If the offer scares you, say “Yes” to learn more.
- Should the offer be above your head, it may be well worthwhile to get coaching on the side.
- Discuss the pros and cons of joining forces with trusted colleagues.
- Do research to familiarize yourself with the basic information.
- As research is conducted, read up on varying viewpoints.
- Share in the next meeting what you have found and ask for opinions.
- Many times there are no right or wrong answers, just varying perspectives. See which appeal to you most.
- At least twice a year try something entirely new and seemingly above your area of expertise.
- Every six months review how far you have come and celebrate!
- As you celebrate give due consideration to what you might conquer next.
