Every once in a while we are provided with a frightening opportunity. The initial instinct is to decline and run as far away as possible. But if you do run, at a later date, when the realization hits, of what “could have been”, that experience in itself proves to be devastating.  This is true for either a job offer sounding far beyond your capability, or being asked to work with highly seasoned executives on an entrepreneurial project.

My Story

Years ago, I was only accustomed to conducting small workshops. One day my phone rang and the person on the other end caused my heart to race. I heard her asking me to provide a keynote to 1,000 people with executives of Fortune 100 companies in the audience. Fortunately, I knew to say “Yes”. My very next call was to a speaking coach. In the end, I received tremendous accolade for a welcomed inspiring talk.

Sharing that story in a workshop, a woman approached me afterward. Mary said she wished she had met me prior. Once upon a time she had the opportunity to appear on the original Oprah TV Show. But she was so scared, it was turned down. Looking back, Mary knows full well it was the wrong thing to do.

  • Say “Yes!” and then self educate or hire a mentor
  • Ask many questions
  • Keep learning from the experience to improve your capabilities

Most often when fear sets in, it is due to a lack of self-confidence. A public speaking class will do wonders to boost self-esteem. Remember, that as long as you keep learning from the experiences good and bad, there is no failure.  It’s to be looked at as your personal marketing research.

  2. Every morning look in the mirror to tell yourself you can do it!
  3. Meditate on where you are today and where you wish to be headed.
  4. Focus on how you will get to where you wish to be headed.
  5. Hire a coach or take a formal class at least once per year.
  6. Research new information every day.
  7. Continually set goals in the form of yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily.
  8. Keep a running task list for what needs to be completed with timeline in place.
  9. Join a collaborative network or mastermind to gain new ideas.
  10. Keep record of your milestones achieved and celebrate at year-end.
