Attract the Right Job or Clientele:
Why A U-turn May Provide An Improved Perspective
You might be wondering why a u-turn may provide an improve perspective, especially after all of the hard work that has been done. The fact is we move so quickly that sometimes there is a nagging feeling that something was overlooked. Should this be the case, it is well-worth retracing your steps to see if the journey to Point B and beyond may be vastly improved. When we are willing, we often recognize and see the benefits due to an improved perspective.
Qualifying, matching, and timing are the three major ingredients for increasing odds in your favor.
My Story
A few years ago, I was asked to join a company as a member of the Board. I realized at the time that some important details were missing. It was also at a hectic time for me, so I chose to move on. However, I always had the feeling the company would improve upon their foundation.
My recent conversation with the CEO confirmed my thoughts. The organization is on a firmer foundation and has an outstanding outlook ahead. While the previous association wasn’t at a prime time, today it is. I agreed to once again provide my assistance where it is needed.
Your Story: Why A U-turn May Provide An Improved Perspective
Have you ever been hard on yourself for having passed up an opportunity or seemingly made a poor decision? Rather than regretting the decision(s) determine if there is a fix in store. List the following:
- Occasions that were passed.
- Reasons for each occasion to have been declined
- Highlight the occasions that may be worthy of revisiting.
- If you were to revisit one or more incidents, what will be the desired outcome?
- Is it worthwhile to reconnect and find a fix?
The first thing to consider before making your U-turn is whether you still have a good relationship with the people involved. Further questions to consider:
- Will you be welcomed back?
- Did you like the people involved?
- How will your newer experiences benefit the project?
It’s the answer to this last question that when phrased well may be used to sell the benefit of taking you back. Explain that the original timing wasn’t right but now you believe it’s better than ever. You just might forge a new partnership. And the u-turn may provide an improved perspective for contributing exceptional work.
