Attract the Right Job or Clientele: News Headlines and Articles to Learn From
Clever headlines have always caught my attention. But when they relate to business, you can bet I’ll read the article in full. This holds true for all variety of media including articles found on Twitter.
Learn from both the bad and good news for a well-rounded perspective.
My Story
Deliver On Promises
The first news item takes issue with Kentucky Fried Chicken. Their television advertisement showcases a bucket of shared chicken for $10. The bucket is brimming over with six sizable pieces of chicken. The company is now being sued by someone who purchased the bucket only to find it 3/4 full. This may be perceived as false advertising.
Lesson 1: Always deliver on Promises. If you can’t keep them, don’t make them!
Only Sell What You Have
On my very first sales job, the Director of Sales shared the advice he first received as a stock broker. “Don’t sell futures unless you trade stock.”
The underlying meaning is to only sell what you currently have and know to be valid. Even if the most exciting invention is about to be announced, hold that thought. Wait until the time is right to make a formal announcement. When is that time? When all the facts are known in every regard.
You might guess which current news story this pertains to. FBI Director James Comey made a very poor decision. This is regardless of political preference. He had very few facts about the reopening of the email investigation. It was revealed that behind the scenes, many FBI employees were already threatening to quit. They claimed there was a complete lack of planning for in-depth investigation the first time around.
According to the article, Comey was trying to save face with employees by reopening the investigation. Unfortunately, his problems compounded with the poor timing, days before the election. The worst part was he apparently didn’t have much to go on to make a proper announcement. And in so doing, he hurt many in the process, including himself.
Lesson 2: Deliver only fact and all of the facts prior to making any declarative announcements.
Higher Road
The approximate quote, “When someone strikes low, you go high”, was stated by First Lady Michelle Obama. Our reputation precedes us in business. We have to take the high road or suffer the consequences. On occasion, someone may get away with a lot of nonsense, but in almost every instance it catches up with them. The better strategies are to stand back in order to look, listen and learn.
Lesson 3: Stand quiet and tall to recognize the improved route.
Your Story
All of the above pointers apply to advancing career, interviewing, sales and just about anything you desire in life. It comes down to character and your personal brand. How you magnify that is up to you. The world will see it as it’s amplified online. By taking the high road, you possess the mindset of an expert and are soon cast into the category of leadership.
Think about whether your are newsworthy, but in the best possible sense. Publicists advise to read the news daily in order to apply the headlines to services we offer. The timeliness will provide opportunities for media interviews.
