Attract the Right Job or Clientele: Methodical Pacing for Improved Results
My Story
Growing up, there was rarely a week gone by without hearing the advice, “Patience is a virtue.” It’s ironic, because genetically or trained, I tend to be a speed demon for getting things done. The topic is related to sales in many forms and came to mind upon reading Mike Kunkle’s latest article on LinkedIn; Click Here. He used the same phrase.
One of the most memorable remarks I ever heard came from multiple people who thought I would never build my business. A year later, they each asked, “How are you growing business at lightning speed?” It became evident that I know how to fast-track goals. Sound relationships come first for all else to follow.
Another Perspective
I’m a believer in doing things according to the client schedule and not my own. Under pressure from management, I handled this by having a sales pipeline filled with potential customers. Accordingly, I was able to have in-depth conversations with each prospect to learn about all of their issues and desires. The extra time allotment gave me the competitive advantage of knowing how to serve my clientele well.
The more relaxed style versus pressuring clients to buy, had clients providing me with a personal brand known as “A breath of fresh air.” In addition to the first sale, referrals and testimonials soon became part of the active pipeline.
Another aspect is that by taking the time to have all questions answered, you are far more likely to deliver a highly targeted proposal to the client’s liking. Operating in this manner is known to secure a higher percentage of sales. It may take longer to get started, but in the end, the sales results are the proof that the allotted extra time is well-worthwhile.
Balancing Act
Admittedly, there are times such as today where a line moves very slowly. Even worse is when the person in front doesn’t see the need to depart promptly. It is at times like these when I pull out my phone and open the Twitter app. Instead of getting irritated, I become time-efficient. By the time my turn comes, I feel good that I finished a task.
Your Story
Consider whether you react to pressure or have a system in place to accomplish goals. To gain better clarity, answer the following questions.
Do you:
- Maintain a running task list?
- Regularly update a quarterly goal achievement calendar?
- Keep a balance between prospecting and current client activity?
The next step is to embrace the subject of each question by ensuring they are a part of your daily ritual. Take the challenge and record the results over the next ninety days and six months. Practicing patience may become habit forming.
Sales Tips:
- Avoid putting pressure on clientele to make sales goals.
- Enjoy conversations with those agreeing to meet.
- Explore both personal and business goals of clients.
- Allow extra time for delivery of requested information.
- Obtain answers to new questions before delivery of proposal.
- Take time to review all conversations for accurate delivery of proposed services.
- Announce upfront that the proposal is a working document for changes to be made as needed.
- Revise your work as needed to ensure becoming the selected provider.
- Proceed with the second delivery of the proposal in the same format as the first.
- Provide a longer timeline for delivery of services and products to ensure timely delivery.
