Attract the Right Job or Clientele

There are days when each of us might feel bad about something in our lives. It could be a tight budget; the need to seek work or an endless stream of errors made that won’t seem to let up. Whatever the case may be, it tends to get us down.

On down days pay attention to the world around you to see where you might shine.

My Story

Recent weeks had me realize that the learning curve ahead of me with errors made in the process, by me and team members, are minimal compared to other news. In the same period, I learned that friends:

  • lost their home
  • were hit by a car
  • were struck by a serious illness

Those occurrences are in need of immediate attention as they can each seriously affect one’s life. Just about everything else is incidental.

One small commitment to help others can make a big difference. For example, when on Twitter, I frequently see job postings. I will retweet those postings. It’s a small gesture that takes almost zero time yet has the possibility of helping someone who is seeking work.

For those of us in better circumstances, it is a wake-up call when a friend tells us they are facing a serious incident. Providing some help and assurance at the moment is the best gift of all.

When these circumstances occur, a good path is to consider mentoring people in our field of expertise. When we reach out to help others, it provides us with a deeper appreciation for where we are today. Projects done well will empower others to see an improved tomorrow. Our reward is seeing that improvement come true.

Your Story

Think about the days you bemoan the fact things aren’t going right.

Consider:

  • What are your tendencies and actions for handling these down days?
  • Do you see room for improvement?
  • How will you handle negative episodes in the future?

Make a commitment for hours in the month you might spare for lending a hand to a group. If you are uncertain where you might fit in, recall the times in your career that were the most fun or inspiring. For example, long ago “Bob” was with the Peace Corps to teach young children to speak English. Today, in his retirement, he found a spot to assist a teacher at a local school with her young students interested in science. He loves working with children and is finding it highly rewarding.

There is always a point in your career to turn around and teach someone else the best of what you have already learned. Whether it’s work or a hobby, consider community service. Your down days will decline while the feeling of doing good increases. The side benefits are you step into a leadership role and establish a reputable personal brand. Your service becomes a win for all.

Sales Tips:
  1. On down days take a deep breath and look around to see what you have.
  2. Reach out to communities in need of your expertise.
  3. As you glance through social media sites, see where your insights might be helpful.
  4. Respond to questions online to provide your expertise.
  5. Look for mentoring events that need someone of your caliber.
  6. Teach classes through organizations needing your assistance.
  7. Provide online training via webinars.
  8. Create a non-profit to help your audience.
  9. Expand on what you know to create new products and services.
  10. Celebrate success!
