Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

Most people get set in their routine and rarely venture away to try something else. Doing the usual is easy and comfortable rather than having to learn something new. The problem with this is if you wish to advance your business or career, taking chances is a necessity from time to time.

If you don’t take some risk, the odds for moving forward are minimal. And if you do seize the opportunity, it may prove not to work as well as originally thought. Herein lies the problem for many. They view something not working out as a failure and quickly give up. The better approach is to analyze what led to the less than stellar results to tweak and improve.

My Story

During my free time, and on occasion, I’ve gone back to playing Canasta with a group of people. A big smile comes to me as I remember my Great Aunt always reprimanding me for not playing correctly yet I almost always won. In the current group, one gentleman jokingly says, “I wish you stayed home.” Luck seems to be on my side for drawing cards.

In business the saying is, The harder you work, the luckier you get.

I believe half the battle is believing you will win whether it’s a card game or a sale. The belief works for getting into a building too, for where you are supposed to have an ID. It’s the attitude that makes the difference. Whether or not I win or succeed isn’t as important as trying. Perseverance, dedication to learning, and a willingness to try will make all the difference in our outcome, in general. And greeting everyone with a smile is the best sales tool of all.

Long ago, I learned to ask myself “what’s the worst that can happen?” Usually, the worst isn’t all that bad. Therefore, I do take calculated risk meaning that I have a good chance of succeeding. Nothing is 100%, and so when something doesn’t work out, I just try again but in a different way. It’s persistent trying to find what does work that eventually produces the desired results.

Your Story

No doubt, you have on occasion been stopped in your tracks, similar to the rest of us. The question becomes how did you react?

Did you:

  • Walk away to forget the experience
  • Feel sorry for yourself and act like a failure or
  • Analyze where you strayed to try again?

The one thing to keep in mind is not to beat yourself up when something doesn’t work out. Stress can take a toll, and that’s the last thing anyone needs in the midst of trying to fix a problem. Experiment with thinking that you are lucky and that things will work out as you hope. And should something not quite make it, know that by attending to it, you may still be able to move forward with the idea. Of course, conferring with peers, reading up on the matter and taking classes will hasten your advancement.
