Attract the Right Job Or Clientele:

Are You On The Inclusion Meter?

Two different experiences today prompt the question, Are you on the inclusion meter?’ One had me shaking my head almost in disbelief, and the other had my complete admiration. The company attracting my attention presents value in every respect, including remarkable teamwork and the latest technological innovation for its industry.

My Stories

The Job Inclusion Meter: Zero

Due to my online activity, offers come my way. Some are sound, others are dubious, but today’s job offer brought me to a sudden stop. Before attempting a sale or seeking work, researching a company and the website particulars is always my first parameter. The company sounds highly credible, and the job will provide excellent experiences for those involved plus serve the team at hand. However, I’m not in the job market, and the offer dumbfounded me.

I was so taken aback that I asked the recruiter whether the seemingly low-ball salary offer was due to my being from the Silicon Valley west-coast area versus the east coast. Today’s offer would apply to an offer on the west coast of years past. More ridiculous is that the expense and time allotment for traveling to the city will heavily eat into the pay.

The second question asked of the recruiter this morning was, if it’s not an east-coast – west-coast disparity in salary, then does it apply to variances in offers for men versus women? The answer suggests there is no disparity in pay. However, unless one lives nearby, or has a partner making a good wage, it makes little sense to take the job

The words diversity, equity, and inclusion began echoing in my mind. Every company and every person is to come to terms with what they may do to improve their actions regarding those three words. Last, make it a team effort to have everyone on the inclusion meter.

The Team Inclusion Meter: Ten

On a better note, new technology and potentially a new service for phones and connectivity on multiple levels are in the forecast this coming quarter. Upon reading the latest news about one vendor, I was encouraged to visit them today. A warm reception was ours as we walked in.

Four people comprised the welcoming team. Together, they represented four different heritages. They each spoke with a smile, revealed a do-good commitment, and favorably responded to questions about their technology in the news. Most notable is that the inclusion meter was popping off the charts as the team collaboratively took turns speaking with us.

Varying service levels exist for what interests us, and the team carefully explained each. The men did not over-step the women nor vice versa. It was almost equal communication among three of the team members.

The fourth member appeared to be a team leader who remained in the background. Instead of taking control of the conversation, he notably stood in the back as he nodded his head positively as information came forth from the team.

The decision was evident after having the necessary information to decide whether this would be the service we wanted. The team didn’t need to ask for a sale. They follow the sales mantra perfectly:

‘ Make it easy for the prospective client to say Yes!’

I volunteered that we would be their new clients when the product announcement arrives.

Your Story: On The Inclusion Meter

The above ‘Team Inclusion Meter at Ten’ experience was vastly different from most and raised the following questions:

  1. What is the composition of your team (gender and heritage), and how do they perform together – if at all.’
  2. The traditional saying is, ‘practice makes perfect.’ Is management allowing each team member to take turns leading conversations so they may learn to lead and advance business plus their careers?
  3. What is the composition of your pay scale, and does it apply equally and fairly across the board?
  4. Like the above scenario, is it worthwhile and practical for employees to make an all-out effort to arrive at the office?
  5. Does everyone on your team feel comfortable providing their input, and are they allowed the freedom to do so?

If you are uncertain about employees’ perception of your take on equality in all forms, now is the time to host a meeting to discuss possibilities. Most often, there is room for improvement. Even if you are doing things perfectly according to your employees, the most critical signal is demonstrating that you care about their well-being.

In Conclusion:

If you have a small business, are an entrepreneur, or have collaborative partners, it’s wise to review communication skillsets. Building teams, companies, and businesses of all sizes attempting to grow client loyalty begin with building harmony within. Inclusivity is the word of the day.
