Do you allow your ego to detract from what you need to hear?
How many people do you know say they want to be successful and would love to pay for “inside information” of what their clientele wants and needs? But deep down it appears to not be true. In fact, I was astounded when a literary agent shared the following which he was so careful to qualify upfront:
“Your next book idea will only work if… I hope you don’t mind my telling you but I have confidential conversations with so many publishers. They receive thousands of submissions yet only have the bandwidth to accept a few. Many of my clients get offended when I try to help put them on the right track. I hope you will take my insight as constructive.”
I was dumbfounded, not about my next book idea but that aspiring authors wouldn’t want to know Bob’s inside information. The entire basis to successful selling is delivering on what the intended client or reading audience wants, needs and desires most. You can bet I paid close attention to what he was telling me.
As it turned out, he didn’t kill my idea. Bob just wanted to be certain that I applied my knowledge of sales techniques to the third book as I did to Nice Girls DO Get the Sale and HIRED! Conveying that I was taking his advice in, I added that for branding purposes, just as I recapped each chapter with sales tips in the first two books, I would do the same in the third.
Likewise, when you are on an interview, it is your job to find out what the hiring manager wants, needs and deeply desires. When you speak to these ingredients, you will find yourself on the short list of preferred candidates.
We finished our conversation with Bob saying, “I can’t wait to get the first few chapters!” Excited and armed with new software for speech recognition, I’m hopeful to have my new project in his hands by end of summer. You can bet all of his advice will be incorporated.
Our advice is designed to help you attract the right job, client and enjoy greater sales. Most importantly, they will be a Smooth Sale!
