How to Use Sales Techniques to Sell Yourself On Interviews

Job seekers about to go on an interview almost always ask the same question, “How do I explain gaps in my resume given I’ve been out of work for so long?”

This is the appropriate time to incorporate a few sales techniques.

#1 Always agrree with an objection.
For example, you might say, “Yes I have been unemployed for two years.  However, I took a small portion of that time to travel, relax and analyze my talents, and how they may best be put to use in the corpporate setting for a more fulfilling career.  Additionally, I educated myself on the areas holding the most interest.  I now have an even more valuable package to contribute to my future employer.

#2 Paint the picture of how you may now apply your talents to the current opening.
Your research upfront will provide insight as to the extras they need but are not stated, and how you may satisfy some or all.

3.  Trial Close.
At the end of your short explanation, turn the tables.  Ask the interviewing party if you sound like the type of candidate they are seeking.  Most likely, the only appropriate answer will be “Yes”.

A sales technique in a seller-prospect meeting is to, through conversation, find opportunity for 3-5 “buy-ins”.  As you develop the relationship, find opportunity to receive 3-5 buy-ins or mini agreements to what you have to say.  As these come into play, the prospect will more likely talk himself into becoming a client, or the hiring manager your next employer.  At the very least, the interviewing party will recommend you to the next round.
