Qualify the Better Business Partners for an Improved Outcome
Trust and ROI are Key Components
A friend shared how his relative was flying from the Middle East to California in order to do a book tour. I tried to forewarn but my words were not welcomed. Assurances were made that “everything is under control, speaking engagements lined up, and audiences will flock to the events.”
The following week, I received a call from the relative. He was already visiting California. But his voice was somber as he relayed, “I rented my home out for an entire month, incurred great expense to fly here, and upon the day of arrival I receive a phone call. It was from my partner. He said he changed his mind on the date and postponed for six weeks.”
My immediate response was to say he was owed reimbursement for the travel at a minimum. Next, I repeated my earlier suggestion made to my friend. It will be a far better ROI if you were to build a following on social media. There are no fees involved, and as you learn how to post, network and promote one another, more people will learn about your book than will ever appear at a book signing. Turnouts for these are dismal.
This reminded me of a previous encounter years ago. Another friend suggested I contact “Bill” whom we both knew. She shared he did a book signing at a major bookstore and attracted 10 people. She was so proud of him. I replied that I had just returned from delivering a keynote talk at a conference that brought in 600 people.
All of these conversations and shared experiences taught me a lot, in particular, how to scrutinize every activity for ROI. This includes career advancement, interviews and job hunts. Are your activities worth the time and expense? If not, what can you improve to lower the fees? When you begin to seriously regard each venue from all angles, you will save yourself a lot of grief and money.
