Seeking the Commonality Factor
Make friends while selling or interviewing!
Today I enjoyed a brand new experience. I was interviewed on a Skype television show distributed to six different networks. The host, Helen Kerrison, out of Belgium, uses a tech company located in the State of Colorado, and, as her guest, I was in California. It was the next best thing to actually being in person.
Upon being asked tips for interviewing, I suggested the better strategy is to find areas of commonality. Point out what you do have in common with the hiring manager through brief story-telling, as in 1-2 minutes of time. The example I provided was, “Helen – you are located in Belgium, and my favorite chocolate is Belgium chocolate!” I caught her by surprise and she began to laugh.
The dialogue then progressed to Helen telling me that their national favorite meal is mussels and french fries. I would never have known that if I hadn’t shared my commonality story. This illustrates the back and forth on a casual level you may develop with the person interviewing you for a job.
When you can make a hiring manager laugh or at least smile, you know you are on the way to hearing HIRED! If you like this one small example for interviewing better, please consider our “Evening of Inspiration” to be held on April 27. It will be in San Francisco, so if you know of anyone in the Bay Area, please send the information to them, too. This is community service work supported by the Sherland Foundation.
