Attract the Right Job or Clientele:  Do You Possess Charm?

We’ve all seen it in a crowded room where one person is surrounded by many others. What is it that seemingly magnetizes people toward a certain someone? Usually it’s a combination of traits. The more common aspects may include a friendly smile, erect posture, well-groomed, inviting, and a great story-teller.

A genuine smile begins the better conversations.

My Story

Years ago, we were in the company of a well-heeled salesman. He was such a good storyteller that I remember those stories today. My favorite is a greatly exaggerated story but I still chuckle.

Bob began that he was on a cable car in San Francisco almost at the top of Nob Hill.  This is among the steepest in the City. Standing on the car nearby, was a woman wearing a long tight-fitting dress. She also happened to be inebriated. Suddenly, the woman fell off of the cable car onto the sidewalk. And she began rolling downhill unable to stop.  She was rolling so fast, no one could keep up to help. Thankfully she was able to stop just prior to the busy intersection.

Bob’s delivery of the story made it even funnier. More people gathered around to listen. We were doubled over with laughter. And that encouraged him to tell more. A great evening was had by all.

I was in awe of Bob’s ability to tell a story with everyone anxiously awaiting the outcome. It was no wonder he was able to sell well. His words stuck like glue to draw people into the inner circle.

I’ll let you in on the secret. Most top sales producers take public speaking classes to become more effective; me included. It makes all the difference in the world unless you have the natural talent.

Your Story

Are you a natural storyteller similar to Bob? If not, do you sometimes feel nervous upon the need to speak with executives or make presentations in front of high level decision-makers?

Improvements to Consider:

  • Public speaking classes
  • Close observation of those charismatic people you know personally
  • Examine specifically what you admire and how you may adapt to your style

The ability to carry on a natural conversation both personal and professional is almost an art form. Once comfortable with all styles of communication, it seems as if anything is possible. You possess the ability to reach more people online, and while in-person, more people will pay keen attention. This obviously leads to increased sales. Likewise, confidence and storytelling are needed for answering the tough questions, without hesitation, during the interview process.

More sales are made by being in tune with the person you are meeting and then connecting the dots regarding similarities. And when you are able to add entertaining anecdotes on these topics, the people with whom you meet are more inclined to listen. The relationship deepens and trust builds. This then invites the initial sale with many more to follow.

Sales Tips:
  1. Observe the traits of those you find charismatic.
  2. Consider why you are attracted to these people.
  3. Figure out how you may adapt some of the traits you admire to your style.
  4. If the lack of confidence is holding you back, prioritize what needs to be done.
  5. Consider a class to build confidence or improve public speaking.
  6. List everything added charisma will do for your business or career.
  7. Create a list of possibilities for business or career growth.
  8. Prioritize your to-do list to see those advancements take place.
  9. Track your achievements.
  10. Reset your long-term vision.
