Eight Actionable Strategies to
Slash Your Fleet Costs

Today, a surprisingly large number of businesses depend on fleets for their operations. Logistics firms, taxi companies, and even grocery stores with integrated shipping arms require vehicles to provide customers with services.

However, fleets can be expensive. Keeping multiple vehicles on the road costs much money.

Therefore, in this post, we look at some actionable strategies that you can use to reduce fleet costs and bring your fleet under control.

  1. Reduce The Size Of the Fleet

First, consider reducing the size of the fleet. Many times over, it has been proven that some may be idle, causing unnecessary depreciation loss. In most cases, the number of vehicles in your inventory can reduce to save cost.

The size of the savings that you can make is considerable. Reducing your fleet by 100 vehicles might save you more than $1 million

Successfully reducing the fleet size requires proper planning. First, work out how many vehicles you will need to utilize, each in total capacity. Next, create a service schedule to enable planning for each vehicle’s downtime. Then recalculate your total vehicle uptime.

Now, take a look at your service interruption history. Find out how many additional backup vehicles you need, just in case those in service suddenly break down. You might need two or three in reserve for a fleet of fifty vehicles to cover emergencies.

  1. Slash Miles Traveled

Another best way to cut fleet costs is to reduce the number of miles you travel. The trick here is only to allow your fleet to operate for necessary business trips, not unnecessary ones.

Naturally, if you run a logistics business, practically all of your trips are necessary. However, if you have more of an office-based firm, endless business meeting trips across the country may add to your costs unnecessarily.

Where possible, take advantage of new technology. Don’t always feel like you have to go and meet people in person (unless there is a compelling reason for doing so). Use Skype, Zoom, and other conference call solutions to communicate.

Fuel is a significant component of typical fleet costs. Therefore, organizations should strive to get higher Miles Per Gallon on all their vehicles.

Fortunately, automotive technologies are helping in this regard. Truck, van, and car manufacturers are making their vehicles considerably more efficient. Hybrid vehicles are an excellent choice for shorter journeys.

Several options are available to achieve additional Miles Per Gallon without buying new vehicles.

First, you can start with drivers and ask them to modify their behavior. One excellent strategy is to teach them how to drive while at the same time preserving fuel. In some cases, you may be able to reduce fuel consumption by a whopping 33 percent.

Second, use innovative vehicle technologies to help you. For instance, switch engine modes to ECO to save fuel on longer journeys.

Lastly, you can try reducing the vehicle’s weight and profile. If there is less weight to haul around, the truck or car will require less energy and use less fuel.

You can also modify the vehicle’s aerodynamic profile. Fitting aftermarket windbreaks to the top of truck cabins, for instance, may be able to reduce fuel consumption significantly.

  1. Reduce Your Lifecycle Costs

Lifecycle cost considerations are critical for proper fleet management. As any owner will know, the upfront price you pay for the vehicle is only a tiny fraction of the total cost to the firm.

You can reduce lifecycle costs by working with an experienced repair shop. Ensure that they understand how to maintain vehicles, such as M&L Truck Service. The goal here is to provide repairs and maintenance preemptively to prevent higher operating costs in the future.

Regular maintenance can also be a powerful tool for keeping fuel consumption low and ensuring that the engine runs efficiently. To carry out this process effectively, you’ll want to use an economics-based replacement planning tool. It will indicate whether you adopt the vehicle replacement’s proper life cycle analysis.

  1. Lower Acquisition Cost

Upfront capital costs for fleets are high and represent a substantial opportunity to review for cutting costs for your firm. It is vital to lower the cost of acquiring vehicles in the first place. Minimizing the lifecycle costs is essential as it plays a big part in the expense.

If you purchase vehicles in bulk or lease them under a multi-vehicle scheme, you may be able to make considerable savings. Likewise, you may be able to order custom OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) vehicles that skip some of the more expensive features that you might not need, such as air conditioning in arctic climates.

The other strategy is to work with a reputable second-hand dealer. This way, you can avoid the lion’s share of depreciation while still getting access to quality, reliable vehicles.

The amount you can save negotiating with dealers tends to be relatively small because of their margin requirements. However, when you work with manufacturers, there are usually more opportunities.

  1. Lower Maintenance Costs

Most fleet managers believe that vehicles require servicing every 3,000 miles. However, those guidelines generally refer to vehicles operating under severe and complex conditions, not average fleet vehicles.

For this reason, you may be able to find OEMs willing to support servicing every 6,000 to 7,000 miles. This way, you’re paying maintenance costs half as frequently as before, but without any significant loss of the vehicle’s lifecycle.

  1. Cut Your Risk Of Accidents

Accidents can have a significant impact on fleet operation costs. If drivers regularly get involved in collisions, groups premiums could go up significantly, putting you at a disadvantage against your rivals.

The better way to deal with this is to offer an effective employee safety training course. Drivers should receive regular instruction on piloting their vehicles while minimizing the risk of a crash.

  1. Boost Retention

Lastly, replacing lost drivers can be expensive, particularly in today’s tight labor market. Consider the strategies, such as training and career progression, to retain your best people. Otherwise, they risk going elsewhere.

Note: Retaining satisfied employees will contribute significantly to your bottom line.
