Attract the Right Job or Clientele:
Growth Depends Upon the Commitment to Ongoing Learning
It’s not failure—or even the fear of failure—that dooms our efforts. The problem is our lack of understanding that failure is our most powerful tool for connection. Sadly, most people will give up when things fall apart, but those who continue to learn and grow will typically reach unexpected new heights.
Aricia Shaffer writes our guest blog, Growth Depends Upon A Commitment to Learning. She shares her entrepreneurial experiences to help readers overcome self-doubt, overcome hurdles, and achieve their desired success.

The Commitment to Ongoing Learning

Years ago, I was invited to lecture at an international conference in California. I was told I would have an audience of about 35 people. I prepared my talk and materials for my small group, planning a discussion format.
Preparation Is Critical
Minutes before my talk, they showed me to the room where I’d be speaking. It was huge; in fact, it was the room where every attendee gathered for the keynote the night before. I asked if there was a smaller space because I wanted to provide a less formal setting for our small discussion group.
They told me I had a standing-room-only crowd coming—over 700 people! While I had extensive experience writing speeches and presentations for others, I was not prepared for this.
I pivoted as well as I could, but I stumbled. My talk was peppered with a lot of “ums” and “okays.” I tried to make it fit into my discussion format, which pulled the audience in, but we didn’t get through all the material. I spent the entire plane ride home picking apart my presentation and beating up on myself.
Learning from Failure
I felt I had failed – completely blocking out the fact that after my talk, a woman from PBS told me she loved the concept of my talk and wanted to learn more. Indeed, she did follow upon a project she was working on. Another woman was a well-known speaker who offered helpful tips and resources. Had the talk gone perfectly, I would have never met her.
I got home and debriefed with my experience, becoming aware of how extraordinary these powerful women connected with me. These connections led to the AP following me on a job where I employed the techniques I’d shared in my talk. Next, Open-Source Radio asked me to join them for an interview.
Leverage Strengths and Weaknesses
The events after the talk made me wonder what would happen if I maximized opportunities more – leveraging my strengths rather than obsessing over my weaknesses plus wondering what I had missed.
I also discovered a gem hidden in my weaknesses. Although my lecture message was interesting and my solutions solid, my genuineness really engaged the audience and drew people in. In failure, I achieved what had eluded me for years.
Deliver to Your Audience’ Desires
People long for connection, and when we are willing to be vulnerable, that’s when people remember our words and stories. It plants a seed in them that, over time, flourishes into new truths about themselves. It builds trust and inspires them to reach out. And it encourages them to try when they’re afraid.
Conclusion: Growth Depends Upon the Commitment to Ongoing Learning
When I debrief after a project these days, I don’t throw anything away as a mistake or a regret. Instead, I look at it and ask, “How can I best utilize this to achieve success?” The challenge is to step up and see the good that can come from accepting hard-learned lessons and make the commitment to ongoing learning to move past unforeseen challenges.
