Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

The way in which people lead comes in a variety of styles as we witness every day at work and in the news. Consistency in the way you typically behave and approach matters will define your leadership capabilities.

My Story

Most people believe that being boisterous and outspoken are the traits of leaders. But that isn’t necessarily so. Those who disagree with conventional thinking will do their own thing for a long while. Eventually, the loners come out stronger at the other end. During the lapse of time, they can more easily focus on what they believe to be essential. In the end, they land far ahead of the curve and are then seen as a leader.

The topic arises today as I finished reading “Entrepreneur Voices on Effective Leadership.” It is a collaborative piece by entrepreneurs who present varying viewpoints on leadership. As I read the book, published by The Staff of Entrepreneur Media, Inc. I realized the varying insights are helpful for those who aspire to do more in their career. Of course, I’m delighted to have my original article, “Are You A Leader or Follower?” included in the book, and my tweet below included:

The typical scenario in the sales environment is to pit one against the other. However, sales managers will do best to meet one-on-one with their representatives to acknowledge how they work. Only then can they craft a good plan of action together. This type of management will increase team morale and enhance performance.

Entrepreneurs are far more savvy about collaborative effort that extends the reach and recognition of their brand. This latter group will see a problem and then strives to create a service or technology to fix it. It is their willingness to address issues that have them experiencing forward growth.

One favorite quote is that of Robert Kennedy who said,

“Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were, and ask why not.”

Your Story per Intent to Lead

At some point, most everyone feels stuck or believes that nothing will ever change. Those who possess courage will attempt to fix the situation.

Change comes when we take action. When challenges arise, do you typically:

  • Complain and do nothing
  • Contemplate possibilities for fixing the situation
  • Take action to implement the better fix?

If you are early in your career, and uncomfortable with the way things are, take note of what continually irritates you. And should you change jobs only to find the same, create a document that details all of it. Then add your beliefs as to the way circumstances should be, and your ideas on how to improve. It could be years, or immediate but ideas will come to fix the situation.

Keep in mind that mentoring younger people on the better ideas as you see them is another avenue for creating change. As others look to you for new thought, you are cast into the spotlight as a leader. But rather than soaking in the praise, use the appreciation as a motivating force to further inspire those following in your footsteps.

Empowering others to be their best and put change into action is at the core of leadership. Working similarly with clients, will lead to a loyal returning and referring clientele!
