Community Friday: Inspiration All Week Long
An elderly gentleman who I recently met, gets much pleasure from serving lunch to other senior citizens at a community kitchen. John was formerly in the accounting department of a well-known banking firm. His wife still travels for her work, and he isn’t one to cook or eat by himself. Not only is John serving his community, but he is also putting himself in the company of others who enjoy eating together.
My Story
‘Believe, Become, Empower’ became my mantra after the miraculous recovery from a broken neck. I had first to believe that I would become the person able to help others. Next was to grow into becoming the leader who feels confident enough to serve.
I soon recognized the need job seekers have to do a better job on selling their talent on interviews. It became my mission to empower these people with the knowledge I gained in my corporate career.
Over time, the information became speaking topics at events and the groundwork for webinars on getting hired. The overwhelming response of gratitude led to the writing of the book, HIRED! How to Use Sales Techniques to Sell Yourself On Interviews.
Strategies Come In All Sizes
- Reach large global audiences with helpful messaging
- Meet people and organizations with similar interests
- Become seen as a leader to assist more people.
Like Minds
My original intent was simply to help people. The appreciation received in the form of thank you notes motivated me to continue. I never expected more than that. By taking the initiative to mentor and share our best, we are suddenly in the leadership position without trying. The traditional channels fade away, and suddenly it feels as if we made it to the C-Suite.
I now find myself being asked to explore possibilities of how a collaborative effort may help more people. As you know, I’m involved with the humanitarian organization, Powerful Women International Connections. And just recently, I became involved with the Empower 7000 Women initiative. Your Story
It’s possible that on occasion, you recognize where improvements should take place on the job. The answer to the problem could be with training or motivating fellow employees. You may be toward the end of your career wondering what to do next, or thinking about a new software idea and are in the process of becoming an entrepreneur.
All of the above possibilities lend themselves well to empowering communities because they include your current interests.

These three items together are the ticket for helping others. Think about everything you have learned over time and what you wish you knew starting out. Consider the topics that always get your attention and how you believe your unique approach does best. Use the subject matter as the starting point for volunteering in person or providing insights online. The people you help will become your biggest fans.
Sales Tips
- Think about what interests you most.
- Who is your potential audience for sharing your best insights?
- Do you need to contact schools, groups or associations?
- Research all the possibilities for mentoring.
- Develop talking points of why your perspective is beneficial.
- Apply interests of those you approach with what you have to offer.
- Story tell in conversation about how your knowledge helped you to include the how.
- Develop content centered around what your topics to share and gain awareness.
- Enjoy the reward of helping others.
