We attempt to intrigue young family members during the holiday season with fun stories and remarkable results, such as Rudolph the Reindeer and Santa Claus flying in a sleigh to deliver gifts and his attempts to climb down the chimney!
How do folkloric stories apply to business? After all, being in business is a serious matter – or is it? It all depends upon perspective and how a light-hearted approach is worthy of serious consideration. Keep ‘ho, ho, ho’ in mind as you read on!
My Story
Sadly, most salespeople and management believe you must relentlessly talk through the meeting 90% of the time to get the sale (or grab it), making it anything but conversational. Worse, the style leads to a one-time event ‘if’ it takes place; typically, it does not. The process makes the role highly stressful and non-gratifying, often leading to the desire to find a ‘better’ job elsewhere.
Folklore Conversations
Upon contacting clientele with whom you have developed a bond, call and ask in your own words something like, ‘What will you be doing this season to keep yourself jolly?’ No doubt, a chuckle will occur. Questions ‘out of the blue’ produce laughter, reduce the tension, and bring about sharing more personal conversations that develop the relationship between participants.
Before delving into business, ask those you encounter about their favorite season story and why. The conversation may drift into another universe, producing insights you never considered. The dialogue will be more pleasant and light-hearted when it returns to reality. The formula often leads to additional business.
Gifting within Budget
Someone recently went far out of their way to assist with an issue for which I was very thankful. Accordingly, I sent a gift basket to the person, which undoubtedly will be received with surprise.
Gifting comes in all shapes and sizes, and giving within your budget is essential. Showing appreciation to those who went out of their way to assist, in addition to loyal clients, is an excellent tradition to embrace.

Not everyone has family or good friends nearby, and we must remember that. Instead of asking, as many do, ‘How was your holiday celebration?’, please share something unique that stands out from your time off! Let the New Conversations Begin!

One element to remember while sharing stories is that no one is immune from upsets or the unexpected. Step by step, test out, share an incident that went awry, the agony attached, and then, with a grin, share how you overcame it to experience better results. You will intrigue the people you meet; many will want to learn more.
Near year-end, during your time off, recall the client conversations that come to mind and why that might be. Undoubtedly, each will include a factor concerning intrigue, being of service, or finding an unusual commonality.
Confirming this is evident for you, from this point forward, begin collecting stories and events that stand out for you, lessons you learn along the way, and, in some instances, the remarkable outcomes that are yours. It can give you a beneficial formula to move forward with a bolder stride and pride in the New Year.
