Looking Good Might Be The Key To Business Success

This observation leads to a whole new industry focused on making people look as good as possible for the office. It’s not just for the day-to-day grind, either. People are trying to look good for interviews and even freelance roles.

Looking good pertains to many levels of communication, including being taken seriously. Be aware that inner beauty contributes much. Underlying essential elements are crucial to business success. The Key To Business Success

One look at the Hollywood roster tells you that looks matter. People in the film industry are beautiful-looking people, not just because they have more money to spend on gym memberships. Being attractive counts and makes a big difference in who gets where in life.

Beauty Exists Everywhere

The intriguing thing about this phenomenon is that most people can take advantage of it. The cues people use to determine whether someone is attractive are flexible. While good looks may not be universal throughout the population, a person can change in various ways. It’s not just about biology. Many other factors are involved.

Looking Good And Manager Appraisal

The way people look has a tremendous effect on how their colleagues perceive their performance. Women rated as “unattractive” by their associates were judged to be successful in their roles only 23 percent of the time. Average women were successful 41 percent of the time, and attractive women were good at what they did 58 percent of the time, according to the people who work for them, controlling for other factors.

Know that the attractiveness rule seems to apply to both men and women. Team members judged attractive men to be significantly more efficient than those whose looks weren’t quite as appealing.

Over a lifetime, an attractive person is much more likely to earn substantially more than an unattractive person. Estimates suggest that good-looking people may take around 3 to 4 percent more over the course of their lifetimes than “average” people, as rated by their peers. That translates to approximately $140,000 across a lifetime versus someone who is not attractive.

Again, though, the research suggests that concepts of attractiveness are not necessarily innate. Giving someone a makeover can lead to dramatic differences in perceptions of attractiveness over time. Simply avoiding a slovenly appearance in the workplace can have a monumental impact on how people perceive you.

How To Look Good At Work

Looking good in the office requires a little common sense and adopting the proper lifestyle. For women, the first place to start is makeup. Makeup brings out the natural features of your face versus going to work “raw” that will not work in your favor. A little lipstick, mascara, and eyeliner can go a long way.

For men, pressed pants, suit jackets, polished shoes, and sensible facial hair can make a big difference. Making sure all clothes are clean and smell good also makes a difference.

Beyond the superficial, you’ll want to prioritize your lifestyle. Many of the most successful people in business put their health first because they know it will serve them best in the long term. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and avoiding the temptation to go to the staff buffet can make a big difference. The more quality food you put into your body, the more it will appear on your skin.

You’ll also want to make sure that you get plenty of shut-eye. Staying late at the office and getting less than seven hours of sleep per night is not conducive to long-term health and wellness. Eventually, it’ll catch up with you and show in your face.

Hitting the gym can also make a difference. Taking some time out to relax while you hit the weights could positively affect how people perceive you in the office. It can positively impact your attractiveness rating if you constantly stay active, fresh-faced, and happy.

Lastly, you’ll want to find ways to be more confident. Evidence suggests that this makes people more attractive, regardless of their appearance.

Being more confident at work is mainly about finding ways to let go. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to perform. Enjoy yourself, be relaxed and authentic, and most everything will eventually come to you.

Do Looks Matter All That Much?

While looks seem to matter a little bit, the overall effect is probably relatively small. Looks seem important, but many good-looking people also tend to be highly conscientious, which determines career success.

Good looks also pale compared to things like social skills and your levels of technical competence. While being attractive might help you get your foot in the door in some companies, you will still need to do the work. There are no shortcuts.

Personality and intelligence are also significant factors. As discussed, being conscientious is essential. You need to be the type of person who is prepared to go into the office and work hard, no matter how you feel. Taking days off, pulling “sickies,” and letting clients down will not work.

Don’t fall into the trap of letting things slip. Put maximum effort into your work every day to achieve your goals and move your life forward in the direction best for you. It is surprising how far you can get just by showing up. It might be challenging for a long time, but eventually, it will pay off.

Conclusion:

In summary, looking good is part of the key to success, but not the whole story. Be budget smart as you attempt to test ways to put yourself in the ‘beautiful’ category to see if it makes a difference in the office. Focusing on how you look at work isn’t just a matter of vanity: it could dramatically improve your career and give you the life you want.
