Attract the Right Job or Clientele:  Move from Fearful to Confident 

When we are about to take on a new challenge, fear sometimes enters into the picture. It stops us in our tracks. How we handle the fear will make all the difference for our outcome.

Nothing is impossible given a positive mindset and a flexible plan.

My Story

Our mindset is very powerful and dictates the direction we take. Once fear sets in, if we don’t properly deal with it, excuses will take over with every reason imaginable not to continue.

Today, a friend and I discussed each of our first sales jobs. Mary told me that her fear of cold-calling (knocking on doors to be granted an appointment) prevented her from being successful. In fact, she fell far short from making her numbers. It was embarrassing and she felt depressed. Nevertheless, she got back up to get a second job where cold calling wasn’t required.

On my first job, I made it through cold calling because I met some very nice people in the process. But on the second job, a trainer uttered a brilliant statement. She said, when it comes to cold calling, change your mindset today. View it as a live game show called “What’s Behind the Golden Door?”

The moment I heard those words, I knew that I was all in. It became so much fun attempting to gain access to the people at Fortune 100 and 500 companies, startups and the entire range. I couldn’t wait to get into the field each day to find what was behind those golden doors. As you can imagine, the President’s Club trip became mine.

 

 

Your Story

New jobs and new challenges most likely have brought on stress at times. Did you handle it well, or did you forego an opportunity? If you gave up, is it something that you now regret?

In the future try these steps:

  • Breathe deeply
  • Create a 2-column list of all the reasons to not move forward and to move forward
  • If the reasons for moving forward win, then hire help as needed.

The next step is to begin thinking positively such as, “I can do this”. If you can’t, someone else will and that will put you into a deeper tailspin. Take the challenge, and pretend you are a world champion ramping up to be the best.

Even with pending sales at large corporations, when you tell yourself, I can do this, greater focus takes place. You begin examining every aspect of communication and all that was asked of you. Delivery becomes impeccable. As clients see this, you become their trusted advisor to earn the sale. Nothing is ever 100% but it’s far less often that you will lose and far more often than you will win.

Experiment with possibilities that are facing you right now. Every morning upon awakening and every evening prior to going to sleep, tell yourself “I can do this”. During the day tell your reflection in the mirror the same. Grasp it and believe it. Then go about doing what needs to get done.

Document this behavior for the next six months, and then decide whether it works or not. You just might be ready for the next challenge!

Sales Tips:
  1. Say yes to scary opportunity.
  2. Get help as needed.
  3. Speak with peers how they might handle situations.
  4. Give yourself positive pep talks every day.
  5. Should an excuse pop up, reframe it into a positive thought.
  6. Practice putting all thoughts into a positive frame of mind.
  7. Encourage others to face their fears.
  8. Feel the power of plowing forth and helping others.
  9. Reset your goals to face the even more challenging.
  10. Continue the motivation with further education. Celebrate success!
