Psychology Can Empower Career and Business Growth

It would be a rarity for someone never to experience a ‘down day.’ When they do occur, many of us will question ourselves about what we are doing and why. The worst is beating ourselves up when mishaps occur, followed by behind-the-scenes demeaning commentary. A side benefit, however, is that we include a touch of informal psychology behind the ongoing questioning of our behavior and those of others.

Most of us could write a book, if not volumes, about the ups and downs of our careers. Accordingly, Dr. Gundu Reddy provides our guest blog, Psychology Can Empower Career and Business Growth.

Psychology Can Empower

Background for Psychology

Over the years, I have learned that success appears to be about much more than competence and work ethic. Some people seem to progress in their careers steadfastly with very few apparent obstacles.

As a practicing psychiatrist, I have seen patients become multimillionaires and lose everything overnight. Others’ hiccups seem to progress to full-fledged choking episodes. Most of us self-sabotage to some degree, either because we do not believe that we are capable of success, because the fear of success is overwhelming, or because of our interpretation of success.

Common obstacles to academic and occupational success include:

Anxiety

Anxiety typically showcases a constant feeling of discomfort and fear and leads a person to feel demotivated, discouraged, and dissuaded. Anxiety often translates to a fear of failure, and an entrepreneur, for example, might get swayed by the pressure of work.

It could further lead them to “feel overwhelmed” by the idea of success, and therefore, they may not even proceed with their ideas. While a small amount of anxiety is essential for self-motivation, too much anxiety can be counterproductive and lead to a freeze. Seeking treatment for anxiety and finding ways to manage anxiety is necessary for success.

Depression

While a small amount of dysphoria can promote ambition, depression  can be associated with attention and memory problems, slowed processes, and impaired problem-solving activity. It can also cause poor motivation, catastrophic responses to feedback, and increased interpersonal conflict with colleagues and supervisors.

Both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and interpersonal therapy can help with thought distortions. One of the most common defense mechanisms associated with depression is denial, and most people do not seek treatment for depression unless severe. Self-awareness and willingness to receive treatment for both anxiety and depression when needed are paramount to success.

Dynamic Conflict

Success means different things to different people. Although our conscious mind may embrace success, our unconscious thoughts can fear success to the point of inducing self-sabotage. For example, if a person is in an abusive relationship or their partner feels threatened by their success, they may think success can mean losing their partner.

Interestingly, parents can also exhibit negative responses to a child’s success. They may fear losing control of their child or fear that their child will move away from them physically and emotionally. The unconscious mind may associate success with parental disapproval.

Comments like ‘Your children are very well adjusted, despite having a working mother’ can be devastating. Success equals being a bad mother.

Catastrophic Thinking

Catastrophic and cognitive distortions can happen as a symptom of or independent of depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Catastrophic thinking is when an individual always thinks of the worst outcome possible for any case.

Catastrophic thinking has led many great minds to go down the path of negative self-perception. One of the most critical aspects of building one’s career is developing self-confidence, and catastrophic thinking makes individuals question their decisions and career path, forcing them to abandon the idea altogether.

This mindset restricts a person’s growth and prevents them from acting toward their goal. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is helpful in addressing catastrophic thoughts and replacing them with more reasonable ones.

Negative Thoughts About Others

Chronic negative thoughts about others can be developmental, personality-related, and a symptom of depression. A key component of success is bringing out the best in others, which is easier to achieve if you like people.

Being able to see the good in others and developing a tolerance for their failings can make the career path and entrepreneurial journey easier. Understanding the difference between showing compassion or patience to others and tolerating destructive workplace behaviors is important.

Substance Abuse

Some of the most dangerous yet common symptoms of substance abuse are:

  • Psychosis
  • Mind fog
  • Emotional instability
  • Cognitive difficulties
  • Behavioral changes
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Social withdrawal

While it is common for professionals and entrepreneurs to have self-medicate anxiety with recreational substances to some degree, without too many adverse effects, overuse of recreational substances to calm anxiety or insomnia can be devastating.
Poor Self-Care

The oldest cliche in the book, not loving yourself, often translates to not caring for yourself and not taking care of yourself.

Poor self-care can include:

  • Not having time for yourself
  • Not exercising
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Poor sleep Hygiene
  • Not meditating
  • Self-medicating with recreational substances

Loving yourself, feeling and believing that you are worthy translates to caring for yourself and executing your pathway to success.

Neglecting Loved Ones

  • Neglecting friendships
  • Neglecting romantic relationships
  • Neglecting parents and siblings

Neglecting those who you love and those who care about you can be as self-destructive as neglecting yourself. Support from a partner motivates us and gives us a reason to want success. However, most professionals and entrepreneurs do not put as much effort into their relationships as they do into their careers and businesses.

Neglect of oneself or loved ones is not usually intentional. It stems from fear and anxiety originating from thoughts like:

“If I take the whole day off and spend it with my partner, I will fail my exams.’

OR:

  • Fail my exams
  • Lose my job
  • File bankruptcy
  • Lose my medical license

These catastrophic thoughts are usually irrational, and remembering that caring for your partner is as important as caring for yourself is an indirect pathway to success. The well-being of those you love will directly affect your well-being.

Some of the proven ways to address these negative thoughts and distressing emotions are:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) benefits individuals as it helps identify negative thought patterns and replace thought distortions with more reasonable thoughts.

Dynamic Therapy: Psychodynamic psychotherapy can help address psychodynamic and interpersonal conflict, addressing barriers to success.

Practicing Self-Care: Self-care includes sleep hygiene, exercising regularly, limiting caffeine intake, restricting alcohol and substance use, following a healthy diet, and journaling. These methods will help the individual develop overall.

Yoga: Several studies show that yoga has many benefits. It helps regulate the sleep cycle and improves overall mood by releasing serotonin and calming the brain. It also allows individuals to take a break from their busy lives and focus entirely on themselves and their well-being by practicing daily.eople going through a similar situation. They can help individuals build resilience, mental strength, and camaraderie. Professional and entrepreneurial support groups can be especially helpful.

Mindfulness Meditation: Mindfulness meditation is about being in the “present moment.” It helps reduce stress, improve concentration and focus, improve overall emotional well-being, and enhance physical health. If someone wants to start a new business and cannot think of ways to execute their plans, practicing mindfulness meditation could provide them clarity and help them reach decisions with careful consideration.

Peer Support Groups: Support groups benefit people in a similar situation. They can help individuals build resilience, mental strength, and camaraderie. Professional and entrepreneurial support groups can be beneficial.

Psychiatric Consultation: If symptoms of anxiety, depression, or ADHD are significantly impairing your career or ability to progress in your career, grow your business, or achieve a work-life balance, it may be best to consult with a psychiatrist to discuss helpful remedies, including medication.

Conclusion: Psychology Can Empower Career and Business Growth

Although some personal sacrifices are necessary to advance your career or grow your business, sacrificing your mental health is counterproductive in the long term. Success almost always comes at a price, so self-reflection is essential, not just for achieving success but for ensuring the price of success isn’t too high.

Most everyone faces mental blocks once in their lifetime, and reaching out when they happen does not make one “weak.” By seeking help, individuals can move their careers forward to enjoy a better future as proof be told, psychology can empower career and business growth.
