Over time, I managed to hone and then own the advantage of not fitting in. It was reassuring to read biographies of female leaders such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Jackie Kennedy as they shared their struggles to find their proper place.

My Story

Sales taught me a tremendous amount about people, behaviors, and myself. It’s a tough occupation that needs persistence every single day and every minute at work. According to managers,

  • I conducted the sales cycle backwards
  • I had audacity to believe I could sell to the giant corporations
  • I would never make it

None of the above proved to be true. I took the right action at the right time for me. The very important lesson learned is that all of the above serves to distinguish you from the competition, and it serves to build a very strong personal brand.

Lessons Learned

Whether your are pursuing new clients or a new job, those making the decision will admire how you differ from your competitors.  But this is true only when you develop a true and vivid short story based upon personal experience. Elements to include are:

  • Why you chose your field
  • How and why your approach differs
  • The benefits you see in your delivery

This form of story-telling serves to not only differentiate you from everyone else but also provide compelling reasons as to why you should be handed the business or selected as the new hire. The very next step is to ask the person listening if they agree with you, or if they have questions. Once agreed to – the sale or the job becomes yours.


Your Story

In the past, have you purposefully tried to change your thought in order to fit in with the crowd or were you okay with standing by yourself? Acknowledge the lessons learned from either scenario. What would you like to do in the future? Begin listing those ideas. In addition, attach goals and timelines to those ideas in order to complete the necessary change.

The other way to advance is to bypass those who do not understand new and different ideas are needed. Seek out individuals and groups that do. Most likely these new connections will be far more advanced. Usually the root of the problem is that you belong with more pro-active thinking people than where you are typically hanging out. Once the recognition hits, it is your opportunity to find the way out and quickly advance forward.

Sales Tips:
  1. Examine where you are today and what specifically troubles you
  2. Commit to where you truly wish to be
  3. Create a plan to give you to your vision
  4. Contemplate who you need to meet and with whom to associate
  5. Pick up the pace on self education to improve weaker areas for all around strength
  6. Set goals with timelines to complete projects
  7. Share what you learn along the way to find your true audience
  8. Examine postings on social media to find those who share similar thought
  9. Research organizations to find the one that will appreciate your help
  10. Remain motivated to continue your progress
