Attract the Right Job Or Clientele:

Should Old Habits Be Forgotten For A Happier New Year?

Humor is one of my natural strategies for sharing a laugh with clientele and those I meet. As the holidays begin to arrive, the typical question is, ‘Should old acquaintances be forgotten and never brought to mind?’ From a business perspective, the answer is ‘No’ and ‘Never’ unless you do not want to work with those connections or do not see any hope of building a relationship and business. Should the latter be the case, it is still best to remember them as lessons come to mind.

My Story

A holiday card triggers today’s blog question, ‘Should old habits be forgotten for a happier new year?’ However, entirely forgetting the old is not a good idea either. We should consider replacing old habits that no longer serve us well with new strategies that do well. But by reflecting on what initially did not work out well or what proves to be out of touch with current times, we can motivate ourselves to continue learning to do our best day by day.

The trigger of today’s blog is a holiday card coming my way from an individual who previously sent a different holiday card this same season. If we truly desire a diverse and inclusive environment in our personal lives and the workplace, we need to acknowledge the varying holidays of the people we know.

‘Practice makes perfect” and ‘step by step’ come to mind to build the societal environment most desire. As a person’s name comes to mind, it’s always good to check how they are doing and if they have special holiday plans. The gesture surprises most people, and they happily build upon the question for an energetic conversation.

As our careers continue to build, it’s also good to recall the struggles we overcame and the more significant lessons. Doing so can be a reminder of further improvement ahead. As we begin to review, sometimes we recall the people who taught us how to improve. It becomes the perfect time to ask them what is new in their life and wish them a happy New Year.

Those in management positions need to review their experiences to enhance their performance and better assist those reporting to them. The interactions with staff reporting to them will be far more engaged when management takes the time to reflect, care and inquire about their reports’ holiday plans. Employees will feel as if their managers care about them personally and professionally. Accordingly, it increases the morale of the team.

Even better is for management to use the holidays as an insightful learning mechanism to enhance business. Near the holidays, conduct a team meeting whereby everyone shares how their family and ancestors celebrate(d) to give insight into their culture. Invite each team member to bring a dish they enjoy at family gatherings for the holidays.

Learning about varying cultures is essential today as it enables more in-depth conversations with clientele open to doing so. As more people willingly participate, the work and social environments will be more inviting and inclusive. The bonus is in earning appreciation and admiration from our clientele.

Your Story: Should Old Habits Be Forgotten?

Most people prefer to sweep their errors and old ways of doing things ‘under the rug’ to avoid humiliation. But there are two issues with this style of thinking:

  1. Ignoring errors inhibits ongoing learning. Recognizing how we correct a poor method to do better can lead us to a perennial way of being on the lookout for continual improvement. Without looking back to strategize your approach forward, less is achievable.
  2. Forgetting the errors and the old habits benefits no one. It is far better to share with staff, peers, and friends, what we learn to improve so that they may do the same.
  3. Work for a win for all. When we admit our weaknesses or lack of knowledge, we show our stamina and strength to move forward. Most of all, doing so motivates those in our company to put in a similar effort.

As the holiday season arrives, enjoy it to the fullest! And as the joyous occasion ends, monitor your automatic response to events and determine if there may be a better way to proceed from now on. Similarly, reflect on old habits to realize how you first changed your actions, which then changed your behaviors and who you have become for the better. And now, you can reflect on how to capitalize on the best you have experienced to advance your endeavors with more excellent care and enthusiasm!
