February seems to be the month for reconnecting with people who dropped into the communication void. Accordingly, the title of this article proves to be true both for personal as well as business relationships.
Personal Lessons for Business
When it comes to personal relationships, many people, in fact, take it personally when others stop talking to them. This may apply in particular to women as men appear to be thicker skinned. We first wonder what we did wrong. Then excuses are made and sometimes anger takes hold. But after the silence is finally broken, and details sorted out, all is forgiven.
5 Sales Training Lessons
The scenario described above in just one paragraph is almost the perfect training document for new salespeople and entrepreneurs.
1. Review
In your quiet time, review the entire scenario of what lead up to the silence. Some people believe business isn’t personal but in fact, it is.
You represent a product or service along with your personal brand and company. If people are avoiding you there is something to be said for examining where you may have erred. If you do realize an error, the best fix is to apologize immediately.
2. Men vs. Women
Recognize the differences between men and women and how they operate. By tuning into gender differences, and speaking to those preferences, you will increase your percentage of sales.
3. Excuses and Anger
These two entities never work in the business world. Either we erred or we didn’t. And if it was the other person’s fault, patience is needed to understand when, where and why the error or misunderstanding took place so that the same may be prevented in the future. Learning from the experience is one of the rewards.
4. Forgive
Life is very hectic for everyone these days. On the personal side, hear the other person out. Let them share their story and why only silence was heard. Usually a reasonable explanation is provided and sometimes good news is added into the mix; congratulations are then in order. Experiencing your good spirit, they will want to hear your story too. And soon you will be fast friends again.
5. Continue
On the business side, it becomes a relief to know a valid story was behind the silence. As a business owner or salesperson it is your duty to follow-up, and check in for news. On a job or trying to get hired, following the same path is essential. When you finally hit the right time, the reward will be enormous in finding both a new friend and new sales to be acquired.
