Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

Use Client Critiques for Advancement

It is never fun to be told what we aren’t doing well, and particularly so by a client or employer.  On the other hand, with a positive mindset in place, the remarks should be seriously thought through.  Questions to seriously consider are listed below in order to help guide you to your next step.

Validity

  1. Did the sharp criticism hold merit or are you in complete disagreement?
  2. If in disagreement, why do you believe the remark was made?
  3. Why are you upset over the remark; are their indicators that a personal nerve was hit; if so what can you do about it?

Competitive Perspective

  1. How do your competitors handle similar circumstances?
  2. Are your competitors better positioned?
  3. Where do you differ with competitors and how do you see your advantage?

Client-Employer Perspective

  • Does the other party have a different frame of reference?
  • Were facts and explanation overlooked?
  • Is there a documented paper trail to prove the true situation?
  • Should a meeting with documentation in hand be requested?
  • Is respect lacking to the degree that it’s time to seek work elsewhere?

Lessons

All of the above questions should lead to insights that offer where you or the other party may have erred.  The important factor is to not lay blame if it was the other person who misjudged.    And if you were the one that made an error, the best action is a swift acknowledgement and apology.

Upon recognizing the ramifications of the error, propose possible solutions.  Do your best to avoid anger, and hopefully the same respect will be shown to you.  A pleasant demeanor is more likely to achieve a negotiated agreement.

Are you still a good match for the client and/or employer?

What was learned in the process of finding agreement?

How may all of the lessons learned be applied to current and future clients?

Advance

The secret to advancing in your own business or career is to learn from mishaps.  Struggles, unkind remarks, and disappointment show up on occasion and serve to slow us down.  During the quieter times is when soul searching and reflection on issues deserve attention.  Acknowledging this and adhering to this practice frequently leads to a-ha moments and an improved method for proceeding.

As far as keeping a positive mindset goes, errors stopping us in our tracks are sometimes a good thing.  Recognition that the current way is no longer working demands that changes are made for the better.   This is what advances our career and business.
