Attract the Right Job or Clientele:
What Do You Think?
A long awaited two day outing, away from the computer, finally arrived. A bus jaunt took us to New York near Times Square. Normally I advise to observe the do’s and don’ts of companies in order to do better, but today as we walked and walked, I was observing life in all its forms.
The first observation was that of the traffic grid even though it’s middle of the week. Buses, cabs, cars, inch along the streets and many are caught in the middle of the intersection interrupting the path of pedestrians. The observation is to walk in this city as much as possible or take the Metro; it would cost a fortune to take a cab that inches along at best case of 5 miles per hour.
As we walked toward the same day ticket booth for live theatre, we were entertained on the street. Elmo, Mickey Mouse and Mr. Peanut greeted those walking by. But admittedly, the most intriguing was seeing the “Naked Cowboy” with guitar. He was wearing briefs and boots but that was it. A few yards away were women painted to represent the American Flag – directly onto their skin; you get where I’m going with this… The conclusion being there is entertainment for every age category on the streets of New York.
A few other oddities occurred given the reputation of the city. We stopped into a shoemaker, expecting pricing to be sky high because after all, it’s New York City. Instead, the pricing took me back to childhood; I was in disbelief.
This evening a nice dinner was enjoyed. We always hear how rude and unfriendly the people are here, but the opposite proved to be true. Two women next to us were visiting from England, and surprisingly the four of us had a very nice and friendly conversation.
What does any of this have to do with business?
Actually these observations have quite a bit to do with business. The entertainers on the street take risk to be different and stand out from the crowd. Capitalizing on being different is what builds your personal brand and the beginning of your branding program to attract attention and clientele.
In business, proprietors and companies are better off focusing on providing value. The shoemaker might possibly do better if he were to raise prices just a bit. Finally, the fact we had a friendly conversation with strangers over dinner resembles meeting with a client for the very first time. We built a friendly conversation that led to some familiarity and commonality. Had this been a prospective client, no doubt it would have led to a deeper conversation, and ultimately the sale.
