Time and again, no matter our endeavor, we face roadblocks, discriminatory remarks, and chiding, which leads us to question ourselves and wonder, ‘Am I being too ambitious?’ followed by, ‘Do I need to quit?’

First and foremost, it is critical to acknowledge that we will accomplish nothing upon quitting. Adding insult to disappointment, we will hear, ‘I told you so!’ In varying ways. The only way to prevent this is to strengthen our mindset and be inquisitive to learn whether valid points reside behind the commentary. Foe or Friend?

We often feel a sense of ‘push back’ when speaking with managers, peers, prospective clients, and anyone with whom we might want to partner for a specific project. Whether the objection is temporary or forever, we must thoroughly examine ‘the Why’ from all perspectives. Doing so is the only way we can dig deep for a thorough explanation and to realize if the other person is quietly being competitive and has concerns about our advancement, or is genuinely concerned about wasting time.

Mindset Can Be Your Cheerleader in Disguise

Admittedly, I dealt with much anger when others used hurtful language to tell me, ‘You can’t!’ The more I heard this, the more determined I became to prove them wrong by embracing my headstrong mindset: ‘Yes, I can!’ and ‘Just watch me!’ 

My experience as a pioneer saleswoman and three-time entrepreneur included attempts by many to stop me from succeeding. The ’Asks’ Are Vital

Before leaving the conversation, learning as much as possible to examine possibilities from multiple angles later is critical. Ask questions with a respectful tone, as anger resolves nothing. By digging deep with questions, we can realize either that the other person does not want us to succeed or that we are missing a vital piece of the puzzle.

Questions to consider include:

  • What has been your experience in similar situations?
  • Why do you believe I can’t find a workaround for the issue?
  • What talent do you think I’m missing and need to embrace?

The questions reveal whether ‘jealousy’ is part of the issue or whether we are missing elements to ensure the idea can proceed as we desire. Understand that every new venture always needs revision and updates. Often, so much more is necessary that we face a critical need for new collaborators or business partners. Although pressure may be upon us to find someone, ensuring that your priorities and values align is vital.

Share Experiences

Whether you lead professional teams, seek to build relatable connections online, or have a specific project in mind, sharing experiences with your audience will encourage more support on many levels. The giving comes back tenfold or more as the sharing encourages more in-depth conversations to become better acquainted with others, which may ultimately provide additional and unexpected opportunities.

My favorite example is that as my career progressed, it was suggested that I become an inspirational speaker. The idea had never previously entered my mind, but the time was ‘now,’ and it proved to be highly enjoyable on multiple levels, in addition to drawing much attention to my work.

Story-sharing was my sales success strategy before I formally knew that was the way to draw prospects in while building their desire to learn more and gradually grow relationships. It encouraged business, and we enjoyed laughter and exchanging more stories over time.

Ironically, the bullying and verbiage indicating, ‘You can’t do that!’ signals that we are onto something significant. Instead of hiding from the remarks, embrace them to weigh the pros and cons for better direction on your behalf. Accept all challenges to prove, ‘Yes, I Can!’, and you will amaze yourself by all you can accomplish, plus be grateful that you did not quit. No matter the disruptions, belief in oneself and one’s abilities is ultimately critical to achieving the desired success.
