Beyond the Buddy System
Being accountable for our actions is essential, and we can take steps beyond the buddy system that will empower building our brand. Review your list of best friends, good friends, acquaintances, and those you don’t know well who will volunteer their help. Volunteering can be as simple as a ReTweet or sharing of a post. We can encourage more similar actions via reciprocity and often being the one who ‘goes first.’
Star Quality
What is being referred to here is the equivalent of a Yelp 5-star rating for your special friends. These are the people who are by your side during the good and not so good times. They are your support, mentors, and advocates.
List the people who:
- Make you smile upon receiving an email or phone call from them
- Have a good sense of humor
- Are good listeners and advisors when problems arise
- Are creative and seem to always promote new ideas for you to try
- Are willing to jump in to try something new alongside you
The reason for recognizing the people with whom you enjoy being around is because business and career endeavors have become more complex. Sometimes you need team members for projects, a Board of Directors, or introductions to others who can assist your endeavors. Having a private network, you may count on, goes miles in developing a sound business.
Project Partners
The question was asked of me, “What do you know about automated marketing?” Other than a few automated tools for online postings, I know very little. However, there are people I can call on who know more should the need arise. It becomes a two-way street. A good friend just emailed to inquire of the people I know in the San Francisco Bay Area that might be interested in her next project. Requests are received almost daily to help someone out whether it’s sharing their article, or posting an event on their behalf.
A more formal arrangement, for many entrepreneurs, will include joint venture partners whereby profits are split or commission is earned. With that said, be certain that any partner selected meets your star requirements.
Team
As business grows, a team you can count on should be put into place. Recent research revealed that the one subject of marketing is today highly complex. It is doubtful one person in the field would know the ins and outs of every single related strategy. Research also showed that it is equally critical for marketing and sales teams to work together as closely as possible to avoid data duplication as well as to enhance productivity.
The most important aspect prior to forming solid partnerships is to revisit your priorities and values for conducting business. Doing so will enable you to seek out a close match from others prior to making a formal commitment.
